Pros

Nice gardens. Very good job here.

Cons

There is a large issue here of management having meetings every day to talk about the schedule changing. They don’t have enough work to justify their high salary jobs so they cram meetings down your throat day after day so they appear busy. Most times meetings consist of repeating the same thing from the prior days useless meetings. Registration and exhibitions are the worst offenders. I’m talking management here. Not the people tasked with actually completing the work. I feel bad for them. Each day time being wasted discussing the same thing over and over. Meanwhile deadlines approaching and if they aren’t met someone will be held to task and you guessed it, management won’t take any responsibility. Conservation has issues meeting deadlines also. They work for the university of delaware and that takes first tier over the museum. Probably it’s an issue with overloading volume of work split with educating. Different departments don’t work well together. A constant theme is the people actually tasked with doing the work taking it upon themselves to do other people’s jobs so they can meet a deadline. Meanwhile management being sheltered by this bottom up approach to work. They sit back pat themselves on the back and say “see we got it done and I don’t know what you were worried about.” It’s because if it was left in your incapable hands the trash would never get picked up. Basically the institution is run like a government agency. Tiny steps forward are overshadowed by countless hours wasted. Time=money but is not factored into the equation. The board of trustees are out of touch. The institution is declining. The endowment should keep them afloat. Good employees on the other hand are taken advantage of and discarded. All the infighting needs to stop. New management needs to be implemented. Clean slate. Hire open thinkers with diversity and inclusion. Not just a bunch of angry power hungry Karen’s.

Responsibilities beyond your pay grade

Pros

- good PTO accrual - snow days that are paid for in bad weather - Better then most HR staff that are approachable with questions and issues

Cons

- Your responsibilities for your role with consistently increase while pay will not be raised appropriately for that role - When you try to speak to upper management about being overwhelmed in your duties, they will just guilt trip you into saying a piece of the museums history will be effected if you can not achieve your duties - There is a huge hierarchy where upper staff will treat hourly employees like garbage - They have a huge partnership with a local university, but do not have a educational benefits for their staff to further their degrees at a discount within that university

Great institution to be a part of

Pros

Beautiful place to work, the people there are passionate about the institution, its history, horticulture, decorative arts, and scholarship.

Cons

As with all long-time organizations there are silos, project management challenges, and, as with any nonprofit, you'll never make as much money there as you will in the private sector.
