Pros

The people who are not in management positions are excellent.

Cons

Management at Wolfe micromanages a lot. There's a lot of pressure from management to keep up with project timelines that were decided on without the feedback of capable scientists. Management often over-commits to clients about the capabilities of their scientists. Since Wolfe only hires "postdoctoral" scientists you will frequently be asked to lie to clients to disguise the fact that you are not in a full-scientist position. Wolfe Labs is focusing strongly on metrics that do not benefit the company in the long term but do look good on a balance sheet..

Wolfe Laboratories, Inc. is a leading translational drug development company serving the pharma, biopharma and biotech industries, with a particular focus on complex molecules. We demand a lot of ourselves: excellence in science, as well as excellence in client service. For nearly 20 years Wolfe Laboratories has been at the forefront of innovation in drug development, and over the past decade we have been selected by more than 200 of the world's leading pharma, biopharma and biotech companies for our expertise and service. While do our best to align our expectations with those we invite on to our team, the work is rigorous and can be demanding at times. It's not for everyone. However, those who join our postdoctoral program are exposed to some of the most complex, cutting-edge projects, and can expect to develop a host of new skills that can’t be learned in an academic environment. We pride ourselves that Wolfe Laboratories provides a stimulating and rewarding place to work and learn, where you can work side-by-side with world-class scientists in a continuous-learning environment, with a very friendly, collegial team, and with competitive pay and benefits. Pros

While I was there, I got to meet some great people in non-management positions. They have all left. You also get to join a network of ex-Wolfe employees who have had similarly bad experiences, for what it's worth.

Cons

The company hires postdoctoral scientists to do much of the laboratory work, because they can be paid less and treated more poorly than other employees. Nearly all of them leave as soon as possible, which is a difficult decision to make as a postdoctoral scientist because it is their first "job" outside of school, or they are fired. No work life balance; I would be told to work on Saturdays and Sundays. The benefits are very poor compared to other companies in the area. They definitely have the worst company culture I've ever experienced. I feel bad for anyone still working there.

Part of Wolfe Laboratories’ success, spanning almost two decades, is based on solving problems our clients can’t solve. This inherently means we present difficult challenges to our scientists. Our experience has been that this is exactly why scientists join us – for the challenge and the opportunity to work on some of the most cutting edge development work in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors. Still, we recognize this culture and approach may not be for everybody. When a Postdoctoral Scientist joins our team, our goal is to invest in the training, professional development and mentoring that will enable the scientist to grow, contribute and succeed within our organization and more broadly within the scientist’s career. Occasionally, a scientist discovers that working in our organization or even the industry is not the path he or she would like to follow. However, many Postdoctoral Scientists are promoted, and some of our most successful scientists have come through our Postdoctoral program. The reality is that Wolfe Laboratories is in the services sector. We take great pride in delivering high quality results in timeframes that meet our clients’ development and clinical timelines. It is almost always the case that our work is a key component of our clients’ drug development lifecycle, and we take seriously our responsibility to deliver. We even express this commitment in our company’s tag line: “Drug Development Done Right. On Time.” Importantly, we do all this within a collaborative and open culture, and do everything we can to encourage a healthy work-life balance. Wolfe Laboratories is growing and hiring. Independent thinkers and enthusiastic team players with a passion for drug development are encouraged to apply. Pros

As with any other company (no matter how bad they are), you will find some kind souls and good technical folks keeping the sanity in the total chaos. I really appreciate them for holding up and balancing out the disorder - but the question is for how long?

Cons

Hmm...where do I start? I'm pretty sure if you search on the internet, talk to folks who have worked and have been working at the Wolfe laboratories/Pace Analytical Life Sciences, Woburn (past Watertown), MA, will reveal the nitty gritty of the work culture you otherwise would miss during an interview. I highly recommend to get in touch with the people who had been a part of this company before you commit your professional career and time to this company. Listen to them! Every suggestion won't be far away from the harsh reality - no matter how much they try to 'soften up' their culture on the web. Certain companies do not learn from the mistakes and at the receiving end are the humans, in this case, technical staff who feel the heat of their mismanagement, misleading 'motto', and extremely poor communication between upper management-HR-technical staff. Stay away as far as possible and if you're already in, try to get out before ship sinks to the bottom.
