Pros

-Wordbake; bring in cakes we've made at home. -Junior staff work really hard and are friendly.

Cons

-Toxic sales team. -Unfocused management. -Poor salaries (compared to my new place) -Absent management (always "working from home" - but get ready for the stink eye when you need to work from home or go to a doctors appointment). -Unmanageable workload due to sales team not understanding how anything in translation and marketing works. -Getting worse as all we can afford to hire is work experience people (they are lovely, but temporary and takes a while to learn the ropes). - Native English employees are given preference. - No complaints process.

I’m sorry to hear you didn't feel that your time at Wordbank was positive. A working relationship should be win-win for both parties, so we wish you all the best in finding a company that is the right fit for you. Since you gave us your input here, I have met on a 1:1 basis with our London teams, to hear feedback across a range of topics, including those you raised. It has been a useful time investment that has given us, as a leadership team, a greater understanding of how our people are engaging with Wordbank in 2018 and what we might do to respond, evolve and improve. I’ve heard high levels of support and positive feedback across topics of autonomy, development, leadership, company culture and work life balance and had some constructive discussions about how we could further develop. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the landscape has shifted dramatically for young people coming into a busy London agency environment like ours. Pressures, expectations and perceptions have changed, and that has resulted in some disconnects that we haven’t seen before. Wordbank has always been a great place for achievers to thrive – we have high expectations of ourselves and the ambition to go with it. We do also recognise, though, that we have a responsibility to equip our Wordbankers with the tools and grounding to be able to survive and flourish in today’s changing working world. We have already rolled out a number of changes to our people programmes based on the feedback we have gathered, and I am looking forward to working collaboratively with our teams on further changes as we continue to grow.

Pros

Team mates can be friendly and know the daily frustration. The work can be interesting and there is a lot that can be learned.

Cons

The head of the team is unable to manage a team properly and does not know how to do the job we do. This leads to no growth and no job progress. We get moaned at if we are not available or need time off while the head is rarely in the office with no excuses. There is no HR and the only person who you can take a complaint to is the COO. As the managers are good friends, this means that nothing is done. The other heads are bullies that are only after sales and not making sure a project or client is looked after or that the job is done correctly. Again, good friends with other managers.

I’m sorry to hear that you feel so negatively about your employment at Wordbank. We are committed to creating a collaborative, ambition-filled environment for our employees and you’re right about the fact that there is a lot to learn within that. It’s disappointing that you’ve chosen to express your feelings externally, rather than via one of the many avenues for staff feedback that we have put in place. We take complaints very seriously. I can’t address your concerns without a dialogue though, so I would encourage you to contact me directly – either in person or via email – so that we can do that.

Incompetent management team

Pros

The company has signed the equal pay campaign so I look forward to them being more open to how much they pay their employers. The days management and senior members of staff are not in the office are the most productive. Free coffee. 23 days holidays. Pension. Good location in Soho.

Cons

Expected to work overtime whereas the management team are hardly there. They have 3/4 day weeks and are “working from home” the rest of the time. The management team have no idea about the translation process or tools we use. So there is no improvement process and we work to the bone to not make money. We’re left to our own devices and expected to get on with it. The passive aggressive attitude is unbearable. The politics and blame culture runs rife in the company with senior members being loud bullies. Unacceptable that nothing is done although we all complain. There are no communication from a new client as to what needs to be done ensuring the delivery is riddled with errors. There seems to be a lack of understanding as to what we’re selling and clients are being lied to.

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that you didn’t feel able to express your concerns through the many channels we have in place to be heard, but we’re grateful to have this feedback now. We are committed to our Investors in People Silver accreditation, which is a constant cycle of improvement and reliant on everyone’s critical role in cultural development. Our flexible working environment, which extends across all teams and roles, allows for flexible working on both number of days and working hours. We deliberately make it possible for people to connect remotely (not just from home) because we appreciate how life and work converge. Our commitment to recognition and reward does include our Wordstars programme to showcase Wordbankers who have really lived our values, but we are constantly seeking input for improvement as to how we recognise and reward our people through pulse surveys, 1:1s and suggestion campaigns, paired with our long-standing ISO certification which supports a culture of improvement and working smarter. We believe that working at Wordbank has to be a win-win for both employee and employer, and we sincerely wish you the best of luck in your search for the right company for you.
