Unclear strategy on how to win but at least we have runway

Pros

-The team: minus the CEO and CTO, leadership is strong with solid big tech experience; top-down, the kindest and most fun, supportive teammates -Head of People is cultivating a solid in office culture where the entire team enjoys lunch and happy hours together which is amazing especially for those tired of working exclusively remote -Lots of runway with recent fundraise -As a saving grace, Workstream has at least one competent founder, the CPO

Cons

-Currently no clear strategy on how to win in this macro environment; both LTV and CAC need serious improvement -Team morale is low and has not recovered since layoffs 6 months ago -CEO is a serial narcissist who fails to listen to his more seasoned leadership team and protects his image by writing fake positive reviews about himself -Tech debt and development velocity is the worst you’ll see for a Series B startup bc we don’t have a real CTO

Directionless Leadership and Unsustainable Culture

Pros

There were some genuinely great coworkers who supported each other through the chaos. Early on, the company was solving a real problem for QSRs during the "Great Resignation" and it felt exciting to be part of that.

Cons

Workstream has completely lost its way. Leadership changes direction constantly with no clear strategy. The founders say they’re “humble and hungry” but operate with arrogance and zero openness to feedback. It’s top-down, and disagreement isn’t tolerated. They only want yes-men. The payroll product is unreliable, yet still being pushed aggressively. Layoffs are frequent. When people leave, they often aren’t replaced, which just increases the workload on those left behind. Burnout is widespread. Raises are rare. Career growth is stagnant. Work-life balance is terrible, especially for US-based teams who are expected to accommodate Asia schedules. There’s a major disconnect between GTM and Engineering. The Engineering team in China doesn’t seem to understand how hiring and payroll actually work in the U.S and it shows in the product. Also, anytime a negative review shows up here, the company floods Glassdoor with clearly manufactured 5-star reviews. It’s obvious and embarrassing.

Pros

Honestly very little pros.. aside from maybe the people you'll work with directly (your direct peers) who are genuinely kind and passionate people just trying to to do their best in a dysfunctional and disorganized environment.

Cons

1. Everything. From pay to management to leadership to company strategy. All of these are non-existent. CEO built an echo chamber around himself with yes-men and all every other executive does the same. 2. Company has no long term viable strategy other than trying to win and begging for big deals which eventually churn anyway. No real innovation. 3. CTO thinks he's the next Elon Musk but can barely articulate his thoughts in any meaningful manner. 4. Company is moving most of its laborforce to China and that team/department is so disconnected from customer wants and needs. (do your customers even want AI as part of their hiring pipeline??) 5. Pay is abysmal, coming at below market rates 6. Work-life balance is non-existent with meetings past 6-7pm on a daily basis typical and expected
