Not A Good Place to Work

Pros

Very loosely managed, so you could take long lunch breaks. Lots of great coworkers in other departments.

Cons

The owners are both incredibly incompetent. One was hardly ever there. When they were, they behaved in a manner I would call incredibly unprofessional. After two years, I couldn't be sure he knew my name because rather than use my name, he referred to me by incredibly offensive homophobic slurs. I think he thought he was being funny, but he never bothered to ask how I felt about it. He often referred to women in demeaning terms, including some of our coworkers, and often alluded to female reproductive organs as metaphors for just about anything. He was often prone to unpredictable mood swings and sudden bouts of rage, including profanity and verbal abuse to anyone/anybody regardless of responsibility. Projects were worked on in earnest and at breakneck speeds only to discover the owners had changed their minds, making entire weeklong projects (sometimes monthlong) complete wastes of time. When this happened, they rarely took responsibility, often placing blame with one of their subordinates. Lastly, I spent two years at the company being consistently promised a raise and near the end was told I shouldn't expect one. Not to mention the wastefulness of the owner's managerial style, where resources were squandered almost constantly. The owners liked to consider themselves "filmmakers" and "part of the industry" yet they had no sympathy to their employees who actually made all of their content for them and showed their lack of respect by criminally under paying their video staff. Yes, they had good benefits that they took care of, but what good is health insurance when you can't afford rent? Overall, I sometimes look back at my time at Zacuto and wonder why I didn't quit in spectacular fashion within two weeks of starting.

Pros

A lot of the general employees that work there are humble, honest and hard workers. Insurance coverage was good.

Cons

Upper management (owners) are very difficult to work under, they barely come into the office and don't work very hard. Most of the employees that did all the hard work of running the company left. Lots of sexist, racist and demeaning comments and "jokes" from upper management. Blatant favoritism, toxic work environment and lots of wasteful mismanagement. Low starting pay, raises are rare (even when responsibility is increased) plenty of unpaid overtime work, bad work-life balance.

Pros

MOST of the people who work there are cool. Insurance is 100% paid for but this is also held over your head when asking for a raise.

Cons

Low pay, restricted vacation dates, expectations for individual sacrifice are very high while owners come and go as they please, employees have no voice, lack of respect for employees, favoritism, bonuses decrease every year while sales increase (xmas bonus cut completely this year), meaningless titles, potentially long hours with little or no warning, employees expected to perform personal tasks for owners (shoveling driveways, moving cars, running personal shopping errands)
