Toxic Culture, Inept Leadership, Flailing Product

Pros

Zapproved provides a lot of superficial perks to compensate for low pay, inept leadership, crappy products, and a toxic culture. These perks include free snacks, cold-brew on draft, and a flexible PTO policy. There are some really nice people across the company who are fun to commiserate with during happy hour.

Cons

Zapproved’s market leadership, which is built almost entirely on likability and customer goodwill, is rapidly eroding. Competitors are continuously innovating and improving. Meanwhile, Zapproved has no product vision, can’t commit to a single course of action for longer than 3 months, and hasn’t shipped a meaningful product release in nearly two years. The most talented, experienced, and intelligent employees are fleeing (or have fled) the company in droves due to the incredibly toxic culture and inept leadership. Lazy senior leaders empower abusive, inept middle-managers to berate, belittle, and gaslight employees and peers without consequence. Employees who report these abusive behaviors to senior leaders and HR are marginalized, stripped of responsibility, and eventually pushed out. Some departments have experienced 100% turnover ever year (for years!) due to this hapless, problematic leadership. Zapproved keeps payroll costs low by systematically recruiting and underpaying employees from under-represented communities. This exploitation is particularly egregious when coupled with the self-congratulatory BS they spew about their DE&I program. True training and growth opportunities are limited. People who get promotions often don’t get raises for months, which stems from a company policy of “proving you can handle the additional responsibilities of the job” before getting paid accordingly. Compounding all of these issues is an unwillingness on the part of the CEO or senior leaders to accept any level of responsibility for the disfunction they have created.

Job Seeker Beware

Pros

Zapproved really sells the company to job seekers by focusing on their perks: - Free snacks - Monday team lunches - Unlimited PTO There are also some really great people who work at the company, but many of them don't stay due to the dysfunction and office politics.

Cons

The product and sales aren't even close to where they should be which creates panic in all departments. There's always a fire to put out and you're expected to drop everything and focus all your attention on fixing the latest issue. If you're a strategic and methodical person, this is not the place for you. Zapproved also preaches about its culture, but just because you create values that speak to your desired culture doesn't make it a reality. The day to day work environment is beyond political and borderline toxic at best, and the leadership team seems to think it can downplay that fact by preaching about diversity and equality.

Toxic Culture and Dysfunctional Management

Pros

Zapproved has pretty open-ended PTO policy, decent 401K matching, snacks in the kitchen, and free lunches a few times per month. Other than that nothing really stands out compared to other small tech companies.

Cons

Zapproved does a really good job selling themselves as a diverse, inclusive, and exciting place with great culture. In reality their understanding of diversity and inclusivity is only skin deep and the culture is outright toxic. Upper management is unable or unwilling to plan ahead, so everything is constantly on fire. Sales quotas, revenue targets and delivery deadlines are chosen arbitrarily and are not based on any data or grounded in reality. Predictably these goals and deadlines are almost always missed leading to constant finger pointing, back-stabbing and complete lack of trust. Favorites who tow the company line, stay positive and say the right things get promoted to positions for which they are often not qualified. People who speak up or try to improve things are ignored at best, or simply let go. As a result people spend most of their time and energy watching their back and are unwilling to take any risk. Collaboration, innovation and teamwork have no place in this environment
