Pros

- Impressive rhetoric skills of the management - Nice office with good coffee

Cons

The management seems to strongly believe in productivity through pressure and micromanagement. Engineers are forced to work quickly, and will consequently introduce numerous bugs for which they need to account later. The engineering team is kept in the dark about the financial state of the company. I have never heard any numbers on costs, revenue, investment, ... I have no idea where money comes from. The team gets updates about some business developments but I suspect that they are heavily filtered, since they're usually very positive. In my opinion the management does not know how to handle negative feedback. There are feedback sessions but no action in the interest of the employee is taken. Even more disturbing, expressing criticism or suggesting improvements to the management is often like shooting yourself in the foot. It might be used against you, as a sign that you're not fully committed. Even after periods of many engineers resigning, nothing fundamentally changed.

Thanks you for taking the time to review atfinity! We are glad you have been with us for over a year. You mentioned some serious improvement points and we like to think we improved on those a lot since you left (We improved management structure to better distribute workloads and give management more piece of mind and consequently more time to act on feedback). Numbers on cost are always a critical point, as most of them a confidential. On the other hand, our investment rounds are less confidential and can be shared with employees under NDAs. If you are still interested, glad to give you a confidential glimpse over coffee if you find the time :)All the best, wherever you are!

Pros

Interesting challenges, snacks, coffee, fruits, pizza, intelligent co-workers and peers.

Cons

There was a huge group of destructive co-workers that fortunately left after me. While I still left atfinity for other reasons, I think the culture improved a lot when I was still there. You see some of their comments here on glassdoor. Mainly I think they were very ungrateful for the opportunities they were given and misunderstood that they were hired to do a job. atfinity gave a lot of juniors a chance to build their career and gave them a lot of responsibility. When then thinks went wrong, they only blamed management. Sure, failed projects are the fault of both employee and manager, but that's it: It's also seldom just a management fault. I have seen a high level of dedication and hard work on the managers side. Guys, it's a startup. Everybody is new there! At least people are trying. I have seen a comment about a lack of respect. I really can't support that, I have already felt treated as an important member of a competent team doing a very challenging job.

There's a lot to improve

Pros

Good colleagues. They are competent and nice people. You may talk about all kinds of silly things or some profound philosophy. In principle, there are interesting challenges, but since you have no say in their design and/or implementation, they feel mute. Work life balance is good. Management will try talking you into overtime, but it is hardly ever compulsory. There seems to be a high demand of the product that is being built.

Cons

Employees are not being taken seriously, or even treated with respect. Their competence is not used. As a software engineer, you are treated like a code monkey. Having an opinion is frowned upon, to say the least. Management tries to manipulate the team's opinion of people they dislike. Feedback is rare and when you get it, it's usually too late and too loud. There is some noticeable movement towards involving employees a bit more, but it's still quite lacking. The structures are authoritarian and decisions are flowing from top to bottom. Sometimes very erratically. People's opinions are not valued and usually, discussions (e.g. about requirements, technical details or time estimates) tend to be ended by an argument of authority. The only thing reminding you that you are working at a startup is the salary. Also, there are no shares, even though they were announced (of course not as a definitive promise) at the time I had an interview.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Having a say is important to us. We regret that our mix of feedback session, grooming meetings, sprint planning, all hands, retrospectives and focus groups did not allow you to be heard. If you want to help us improve atfinity for current and future employees our doors are always open. The entire team would be happy to see you again!
