No concern for staff well-being

Pros

The students are inspiring, fun, and caring. Many of the programming staff genuinely care about bringing positive change to the community.

Cons

There is absolutely no accountability or transparency. Management is generally inexperienced and ill-equipped to handle most serious situations. There is no respect for personal boundaries. Programming staff tends to respect the concept, but leadership does not, which is a problem. Too many participants, not enough staff, which results in overworked staff, low quality service, and incredibly low staff morale. No clear expectations or protocols for most situations, so policies are often made up as they go along. An Employee Handbook is always referred to, but has never been published or shared with staff, and has been in the works for years, which speaks to the lack of organization and low prioritization of staff-well being. CEO and Founder handle HR situations, which results in staff feeling uncomfortable about being honest and then there is no one to hold the two of them accountable.

Pros

Students are incredible. Most of your co workers will also be some of the best people you will come across. Also, your work will make a difference. Generally interns tend to have a positive experience.

Cons

In one word this work environment can be described as unprofessional. There is no HR department or any actual accountability for unethical behavior (including sexual harassment and blatant lying). The company has lost a majority of its best talent and will continue to lose passionate individuals. In fact, people are wiling to leave this harmful environment even if they do not have another job lined up. If you have the opportunity to find a job elsewhere, I strongly recommend you continue looking. If you feel you must take the offer due to financial hardship, make sure you speak to a former employee before making a final decision.

Toxic work environment

Pros

The students are amazing and being able to mentor them is very rewarding. Some of the programming staff will also become great friends. Great time off benefits.

Cons

No accountability with the leadership in this organization. No properly trained HR. Management seems to lack the knowledge of employee rights & they tend to be very manipulative to avoid taking accountability for any wrong doing. Employees are overworked & underpaid. No room for growth. Because of the "hugging" environment, harassing behavior is considered ok. In reality it just creates a toxic work environment.
