Pros

Free lunch is good. Having talented colleagues to work alongside. There are some really smart people there.

Cons

Staff are not issued with employment contracts, instead they are referred to their statutory rights. That should set alarm bells ringing. The "unlimited holiday" perk is a myth, as taking time off is only permitted "so long as it doesn't affect the business".. (the implication being "if you can take two weeks off without affecting the business, then why do we need you?") The food + hairdressing services aren't the "perks" they first appear to be. They're actually designed to keep you in the office and not leave the building. Nobody takes lunch breaks longer than the time it takes to eat their food, most finish their lunch and are back working within 15 minutes. Snacks are delivered to your desk mid-morning and mid-afternoon to keep you at your keyboard. That coupled with the regular 8am-7pm working hours makes for a very long tiring day. These problems are compounded by then verbal bullying and shaming of staff in front of their colleagues by senior management happens on a daily basis. The CEO claims he "loves" each and every one of his staff. Sorry, you just don't treat people you "love" and respect that way. For example, there are no written specs, there's just a short discussion between the developer and Senior Management of what is required. The problem is, often the manager misremembers their original conversation and instead expects them to deliver something different from what was discussed, and goes on to publicly berate the developer for not delivering "what was asked for". Too afraid to speak up, colleagues just give each other knowing looks. There are no career opportunities its a flat structure of "the team" the CEO and his assistant. Grandiose staff events to offset this toxic work environment just don't cut it, they seem more of an expression of the owners wealth than something done to please the staff. Even a positive review for this company on this site ends with "at times it can feel like nothing you do is good enough." Says it all.

Pros

Christmas and Summer parties. Nice location in the country. Well paid. Organic food cooked onsite.

Cons

Very long hours- evening and weekend work expected with no extra pay. "Unlimited holiday"- but in reality people have less holiday than most jobs because it is used against them in reviews. (Nobody in the team took over 25 days/year and most took under 20). Taking breaks is also monitored and frowned upon. No praise or recognition from management. Aggressive management style- Bullying, shaming, blaming, nitpicking and micromanaging. Long hours mean it is incompatible with having a young family.

Hi. Firstly thank you for your review. I'm gutted that you appear to have had a bad experience working with us. Your review doesn't seem in any way offensive, so I believe you genuinely feel this way. It's a pretty challenging environment here, and we often say (which, if you were interviewed by me, you'll remember) that people tend to stay for a few weeks or forever, and I go to great lengths to labour that we work long hours and it is not an easy environment, so candidates can make the decision whether they want to join us or not. It really isn't for everyone. But it's impossible to overstate how much I care that our people are respected and cared for. I realise you may not want to provide any more information, but anything you can tell me to help me narrow down what area of training you felt was lacking would be extremely helpful. I'm also concerned that you believe it to be a cliquey environment, as I honestly believe our people are among the finest and most beautiful-spirited human beings you'll find anywhere in the world, and are usually extremely welcoming of new starters. I agree though, our induction process is rubbish, and we're working on it, so I totally take your point on that. In terms of unrealistic time commitments, well we do work long hours. This is true. But I don't ask anyone to. I am just lucky enough to have a team of exceptionally dedicated and brilliant people who want to get something extraordinary done. This kind of thing doesn't generally get done between 9 and 5. We have very little sickness, and sometimes I have to forcefully demand that everyone goes home. People often dial in and help out on the odd occasion that they are sick and I'll often discover people have come in over the weekend to work when there really wasn't any pressing need to - "if you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life". Nevertheless, it's a priority currently to find ways to reduce the number of hours our team are spending at the office, as I think this will be better for everyone in the long run. Again, thank you for your review because, although it was negative, I don't think you're being snotty or unkind. I just think you didn't like it here, and you've made very reasonable suggestions, considering your disappointments. As I say, it isn't for everyone, and I'm sorry it wasn't for you. Thank you from all of us for the efforts you put in and the work you did while you were here, and I wish you all the best for the future. Simon
