Excellent mission; divisive CEO

Pros

Excellent, talented, committed staff - some of the most committed people I've ever worked with. Excellent mission filling a need in NYC public schools.

Cons

Divisive CEO. Drove out many talented senior leaders, many times over. My experience: he wanted people to agree with him and do exactly what he wanted, only in the way that he wanted it done. When you disagreed, as is expected and healthy, he made it extremely challenging and eventually so hostile that I left - and many others did, too.

Change Needs to Come From The Top

Pros

Many of the reviews on here point to smart colleagues and a great culture as a major plus for iMentor, and that's true. The org does a good job hiring exceptional talent. Sadly, problems at the top mean that they cannot hold onto great people for long.

Cons

The CEO does not know how to run an organization - he has openly stated he does not believe in strategy, and refuses to make data-driven decisions even when the data are clear. As such, there is huge pressure to 'make the numbers fit the conclusions' instead of the other way around. This is not a way to make decisions or to grow sustainably. Furthermore, this disdain for critical analysis means that meaningful improvements to the program model or to the mentor experience are not possible - unless the CEO thought of it, it's not a good idea and cannot be implemented. The conclusion of this is that the only people who rise through the org are those willing to say yes to his ideas uncritically - disagree, and you'll find yourself sidelined. The leadership levels turn over rapidly, and this is a huge reason why.

Pros

Good cause, professional and knowledgeable mid-level staff

Cons

Gets manipulative and unstable as you get close to the top. One particular person feels threatened by intelligence, making the lives of top staffers quite miserable. Top staff below this person leaves in regular cycles.
