How does someone who majored in mathematics for undergrad AND graduate school end up working in software engineering? Emmett Wilson calls his road to becoming a mobile software engineer at Dropbox “unconventional” but you’ll have to read this Muse article to discover how one impactful weekend had a previous bike courier pursuing a career that would eventually have him building features for users of Dropbox.
May is API (Asian Pacific Islander) heritage month and this year’s theme is “out of the shadows.” In recent months, there has been a highly visible spike in anti-Asian hate, but the lack of visibility over the past year and erasure often experienced by this community isn’t new. This year’s theme aims to tackle the myth that Asians are often a quiet collective, while empowering the community to make themselves seen and heard. Co-lead for Asians@, our API employee resource group, Sally Zhang shares more about the theme and how we’re commemorating the API community at Dropbox this month.
For Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month this year, our Asians@ employee resource group wants to encourage one another and their community to step “out of the shadows” and into their power. In showing up as their full selves, further exploring their identities, and using their voices, they hope to empower one another to stand up and show that it’s their time to be heard and seen for everything they are, and not the myths they’re perceived as. This theme is meant to strike down the stereotype that Asian Pacific Islanders are often passive and quiet, rather than bold, expressive, and richly multifaceted in ethnicity, culture, and identity. Like the tiger often featured as a symbol of strength shared across many of their cultures, the API community has the ability to disrupt the stillness of silence and unleash a deafening roar.

Our shift to a Virtual First workplace means that Dropboxers around the world have more freedom to do the stuff they love—including starting a family band. We’re so excited to be at the 47th annual convention of the National Society of Black Engineers this week! It’s our first official day of Virtual First!!! At Dropbox, we believe in people over places, which is why we don’t limit the talent of our teams to a few cities around the world. We’re building tools that allow us to collaborate, no matter where we choose to work. In doing so, we’re also enabling Dropboxers to build the lives they want to lead outside of work.
Do you still use a flash drive? While we don’t, we must pay our respects to the tech that inspired the need for Dropbox on National Flash Drive Day. Over ten years ago, co-founder Drew Houston started writing the base code for what would later become Dropbox on a bus from Boston to New York when he realized he had forgotten his flash drive. In remembering our start, we’re grateful for what Drew forgot because it brought us to where we are today!
We take collaboration very seriously at Dropbox, and in a Virtual First workplace, it’s more important than ever. Last week we held our Better Together Summit to explore how we can all contribute to helping the world work better in 2021—read about some of the highlights in a new blog post.
