May is API (Asian Pacific Islander) heritage month and this year’s theme is “out of the shadows.” In recent months, there has been a highly visible spike in anti-Asian hate, but the lack of visibility over the past year and erasure often experienced by this community isn’t new. This year’s theme aims to tackle the myth that Asians are often a quiet collective, while empowering the community to make themselves seen and heard. Co-lead for Asians@, our API employee resource group, Sally Zhang shares more about the theme and how we’re commemorating the API community at Dropbox this month.
For Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month this year, our Asians@ employee resource group wants to encourage one another and their community to step “out of the shadows” and into their power. In showing up as their full selves, further exploring their identities, and using their voices, they hope to empower one another to stand up and show that it’s their time to be heard and seen for everything they are, and not the myths they’re perceived as. This theme is meant to strike down the stereotype that Asian Pacific Islanders are often passive and quiet, rather than bold, expressive, and richly multifaceted in ethnicity, culture, and identity. Like the tiger often featured as a symbol of strength shared across many of their cultures, the API community has the ability to disrupt the stillness of silence and unleash a deafening roar.

Do you still use a flash drive? While we don’t, we must pay our respects to the tech that inspired the need for Dropbox on National Flash Drive Day. Over ten years ago, co-founder Drew Houston started writing the base code for what would later become Dropbox on a bus from Boston to New York when he realized he had forgotten his flash drive. In remembering our start, we’re grateful for what Drew forgot because it brought us to where we are today!
