The "National Mental Health Report Card 2023," presents a troubling trend for mental health in Australia, notably among our youth. Here our General Manager, Sean Betland, weighs in with his key insights. Young Australians are struggling. A shocking rise in mental health issues for ages 16-24, particularly young women reaching a prevalence rate of 45.5%. Common social challenges include loneliness, financial stress, the pandemic, natural disasters, and global uncertainties all paint a complex picture affecting mental health. Despite progress with the mental health system, many Australians still face high hurdles to accessing mental health professionals, and those receiving help often report limited clinical improvement. Importantly, we’re not seeing the whole picture. The report was broken down by age and gender only and hasn’t considered at a more specific level the impacts on how race, gender, sexuality, disability status, neurodiversity, culture and class intersect and impact mental health. What are the lessons for health professionals to take away from the report? We need to: 🔹 Appreciate the complexity of contributing factors when it comes to a person’s overall mental health status — and try to understand what people perceive as important. 🔹 Know the value of understanding and taking into account people’s physical, psychological, and social influences. 🔹 Be present for our clients – many of them are managing some form of challenge in their da
