“We see these patients during one of the most stressful times in their life. When you tell them that you can potentially get them home sooner, they get very excited. It’s almost like magic,” said Dr. Mohammad Ramadan, a urologist from SSM Health Medical Group in Oklahoma City. A patient interaction is more than just a clinical experience. Lung screening is transforming how cancer is found. Now, robotic-assisted bronchoscopy using Intuitive’s Ion endoluminal system is changing what we can do about it. A Europe-first study published in Thorax followed two hundred UK NHS patients with suspicious lung nodules undergoing biopsy with Ion. The results were remarkable: 99% precision in reaching difficult nodules (tool in lesion rate) and 92% diagnostic accuracy. “By using Ion to reach and biopsy these nodules, we’re more likely to give patients a clear diagnosis sooner, making screening more meaningful than before,” says Professor Pallav Shah, Consultant Respiratory Physician at Royal Brompton Hospital. “Most importantly, we can increase the chance of being able to provide curative treatment.” As lung screening programs expand, Ion could help healthcare teams turn early detection into early intervention—addressing capacity challenges while improving outcomes.
