I applied through university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at 3M (Evanston, IL) in Dec 2015
Interview
One month after applying online for the same position, the company announced a visit to campus with alumni interviews for Research and Manufacturing interns. My resume was selected for an interview, I chose a time slot, and I began researching the company's values more deeply. I read the name of the recruiter who would be interviewing, and I remembered him from an earlier career fair. Showed up for the earliest interview slot, and kept a positive attitude. The recruiter was pleasant (a morning person) and personable throughout the entire process.
The interview was 30 minutes long. The first half composed of a sales pitch for the company and the position, and a slightly more detailed description of example assignments. The next half involved light Q&A, covering some of my resume, and with a HEAVY emphasis on my interest in the position. Sharing the same alma mater, recalling him from the career fair, mentioning names, being personable, and sharing similar musical interests as the recruiter helped establish a close connection.
Sent a followup/thank you/further questions email later that night; received a response business day after the next. An email instructing interested applicants to apply for a particular req. # was sent a week after the recruiter responded the first time, and I received an offer the day after.

Very laid back recruiter - mostly a spokesman of the company. Told me a lot about the company and then asked basic questions about myself. "What kind of team player are you?". Asked about my past internship.
