I applied in-person. I interviewed at American Lithium Energy (Carlsbad, CA) in June 2023
Interview
Met with rep in career Fair. Followed up. Was asked to come in for a panel interview. Before I even followed up I received a text asking for references. References provided. Was asked to meet with CEO for second interview on site. Nobody at the company speaks English fluently so understanding exactly what they wanted to know was tough. This does not excuse them from asking inappropriate questions. After the 1.5 hour panel interview & a 40 minute interview with the CEO and me answering every question they had I was not asked if I had questions. The CEO was falling asleep as soon as he asked the question. Weird. After the CEO asked me everything and we went through my experience and why I left every company he simply said - I don't think you know how to do anything since you left the company after 6 months. I sent them an email indicating I would not be interested in working there. Also, they did not want to tell me the salary - which is a clear indication that they pay poorly. I recommend for anybody serious about their career path to avoid this employer. Too many red flags.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
What is your GPA? (Weird question considering I have over 10 years of industry experience) What year did you graduate? (Borderline illegal. Gauging my age?) Where do you live? (Specific neighborhood in City - They already knew I was local but they wanted to know the specific neighborhood) Do you own your home or do you rent? (Has nothing to do with my ability to perform the job)
I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at American Lithium Energy (Carlsbad, CA)
Interview
Had a sit down with one of the owners Wife.
She seems to be playing the role of HR. Then interviewed with my boss in the Lab. Then finally with 1 of the engineer's on the phone due to covid. It went quickly.
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
I was explained that some of the workers sound like they are being aggressive due to accents. But not to worry they aren't fighting or yelling. They don't like drama.

Interview
Interview lasted over 4 hours with 8-9 people all asking me more or less the exact same questions. Some very invasive personal questions were asked about my family and whether I am planning to get married, but I chalk this up to an innocent culture difference. Still quite awkward. Interviewers were mostly quite polite, with the exception of the CEO who interviewed me last. He made me wait over half an hour in a conference room, and then only asked me a handful of questions, most of which were in my opinion not relevant to the job or not indicative of my abilities. Despite the majority of the interviewers explicitly telling me they were impressed with my qualifications, I never received a call back, presumably because the CEO did not like my undergraduate GPA (I graduated years ago) or the fact that I lack experience in PLC, which was not on the job description.
The job description was another problem. The position was for a mechanical engineer, however the description has far more to do with Manufacturing or Process Engineering. The description and phone screen made it sound as if design is a large portion of the workload, however during the in-person interview it was clear that there was little design work to do, and that the duties would be mostly the installation, qualification, and maintenance of industrial machinery. It sounded to me ask if they have had problems recruiting and retaining mechanical engineers because of the nature of the work.
We never reached pay negotiations, but it was strongly hinted to me during the interview that pay was low and that the company offers stock. Personally I was not fond of this, but understand that it may be enticing to others.
Th environment there seemed tense. I heard people speaking very harshly to each other in another room while I was waiting for the first interviewer to talk to me. Personally I am rather relieved they did not make me an offer, even though I believe I was qualified.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
They asked a lot about prior experience with heavy machinery (using it, maintaining it, installing it), and about specific projects listed on my resume. They also asked about my old GPA, and if I had experience with PLC.
