      Software Development Manager Interview

      12 Feb 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Appian in Nov 2018

      Interview

First round was a phone screen followed by on site interviews. Onsite interviews consisted of 2 coding interviews, 2 management, process, behavioral interviews and one strategy related interview. Everyone was very professional and you could see and feel the amazing culture at Appian. Appian’s culture is what makes them stand out from most of the other companies in the area.

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Appian (Reston, VA) in Apr 2019

      Interview

I thought the interview went okay. They first took me around the office, specifically their engineering dept, and I found that it was basically very young people working in very close proximity. The whole process lasted about 4 1/2 hrs. First half was technical while the other was with senior management. I flew through the technical interviews very easily since I was already skilled in how and what they were developing software with. I had interviews with two Software Engineers, another Manager of Software Development, and Senior Manager of Software Development. Every conversation made me believe that I will be offered the position. The second half was with senior management, specifically, with Director of Software Development and Chief Counsel. The Director warned me about his unusual interview style. Actually, I liked how his questions were very tangential, getting deeper in some areas, while others had a different context altogether. I felt very positive after speaking to him. Conversation with Chief Counsel was also very nice. He was very down to earth and asked very straight forward questions. I believe the reasons I wasn't offered the job were - a. I may have been over qualified for the position making me incompatible with their salary range. b. I may have come across as arrogant when I expressed interest in positions that were senior. I did that since I felt the interview was easy and all questions I was asked were very straight forward. c. I work for a very large company and maybe they thought that was a barrier with me being agile since I did mention that things tend to move/progress slowly in my current company and I cited positives of this corporate behavior. One issue I do want to bring up here is the fact that no one reached out to me after I received an email that I wasn't offered but are willing to discuss why. I responded back with availability and am still waiting for someone to respond and its been little over two weeks. I would certainly apply again since I like everything they are doing and the people I met were very friendly.
