      Software Engineering/Hardware Engineering Interview

      2 Mar 2022

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Arm in Jan 2022

      Interview

The first stage is to submit your CV with a cover letter etc. After this, you are invited to a HireVue interview, where basic motivational questions are asked - this stage is okay, as you're able to retry each question as much as you'd like (other than the coding question), and your video answers aren't analysed by AI After this point, you're invited to a 2 hour interview with 2 to 3 members already in Arm, who explain to you what their team does and talks to you a bit more about Arm. In this interview, you're asked some questions about things on your CV, what kind of projects you've worked on, and a few questions to do with whichever language you did your HireVue coding test on. After this, there's a coding part, where you go through different snippets of code and have to explain/fix things, or write new solutions. I did interviews for both hardware and software, and although I think the hardware interview went worse than software, both of them went quite smoothly and there weren't any major things I got wrong. I had a welcome presentation a few days before my hardware interview, and because I already attended this I didn't need to go to the welcome presentation for the software interview which was a couple of weeks after. In this welcome presentation I specifically asked the lady who was presenting it if it has been a while after my interview, should I assume I have been rejected and is it common that Arm won't reply to me after the interview if I was unsuccessful - the lady said that this isn't the case, and Arm will reply to everyone, there is a maximum of 2 weeks, and that you should reach out to your TA if you haven't heard back. I heard the same thing after my software interview - I was told theres something along the lines of a company policy which is that a reply should be within 2 weeks, and if its taking a little longer be sure to let my TA know. It had been 2 weeks after my hardware interview, so I emailed my TA, and he called me later in the day to tell me he would call me about the outcome on that Friday. That Friday passed, and I heard nothing, so I waited another week, and emailed again on Friday, thinking perhaps I had misunderstood and he meant this friday. My TA responded to that email after a few minutes saying he would give me a call later on the same day. I hear nothing that day, and another two weeks pass, so I email one last time, apologising for chasing it up again but I just wanted to make sure that my application was still under review. My TA responded again saying that he has been understandably very busy, but will respond to everyone who interviewed for hardware by the end of the week, Friday. For the third time, Friday passed and I heard absolutely nothing. My hardware interview was on the 11th of January, and my TA specifically emailed me saying he would let me know about the outcome of my interview on the 21st of January, the 28th of January, and the 10th of February, and on each and every day I heard nothing. For my software interview, I reached out to ask if my application was still under review on the 2nd of February, after I had my interview was on the 19th of January, and I heard no response whatsoever, so I haven't bothered trying to reach out again. Arm seems like an extremely interesting and good place to work for, and I learned a lot through the interview process. As well as this, in my final interviewers were quite friendly, and only made me want to work at Arm more. It just feels very disappointing and demotivating to feel as though you have done quite well in two interviews, be repeatedly assured you will be receiving a quick response and that this company doesn't 'ghost' candidates, then receive no feedback whatsoever. I was told the maximum wait time for a response should be two weeks, but it's been nearly two months now so although I've heard nothing back I think it's quite clear I have been rejected.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

hirevue stage - basic questions e.g. tell us about yourself, what makes you suitable for arm, give an example of when you ... zoom interview stage - a project you're proud of, things related to your CV, as well as technical questions i.e. fixing/creating things that deal with simple data structures, designing certain things etc.
