I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at BASF (Ghent) in June 2024
Interview
Poor communications from recruitment team, unreasonable expectation to wait 3 months for travel reimbursement sprung on after the fact - would not recommend!
It took a month from submitting my application for the recruiter to reach out. The recruiter prefers communicating via unscheduled phone calls (from a German number), but unfortunately the quality of the line was so bad these discussions were extremely strenuous. The recruiter was not great at following up the calls with the promised emails, I had to ask to be sent the promised information.
The actual interviews were reasonable for the role and the interactions with the interviewers were mostly pleasant. The first stage of the process consisted of a one-hour panel interview with the hiring manager and two team members (covering experience, tech skills and soft skills), and a 30-minute check-in with HR (covering the process, benefits and salary expectations). After this, I was invited to the next round, which included a take-home exercise (broadly phrased R and Python programming questions using example data, to explore in 3 days) and a two-hour on-site panel interview (7 interviewers) to present and discuss solutions. I received the decision and feedback a few days after the on-site interview.
As I am currently living in a different country, I was assured that the travel & accommodation expenses associated with the on-site interview would be reimbursed. The company policy for reimbursement was not voluntarily shared with me, I had to reach out to the recruiter to receive this before I booked my travel.
After the on-site interview, I submitted my itemised expenses with receipts, but it took almost a week for a recruitment team member to even acknowledge this and inform me that it would take 3 MONTHS to get reimbursed due to internal bureaucracy. I find it extremely unprofessional that this detail was not communicated to me before I incurred these expenses. It is shocking that BASF expects interview candidates to shoulder an interest-free loan of this magnitude for this long.
