      Sales Associate Interview

      30 Oct 2012
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at Bath & Body Works in Oct 2012

      Interview

I am so glad I looked on this site before I interviewed!! All the questions I read about were asked. Being in a small town, I didn't think it would be a group interview, but it was, myself and another girl. We were interviewed by the co-manager. She was very laid back and easy to talk with. I had applied for seasonal work about a month before, and didn't hear anything. I called after I turned in the app and asked about my status, and the girl I talked to said that she would put my app in the office. I was at the mall yesterday, and I was in Bath and Body and decided to ask if I needed to apply again or anything. They told me to call in at 2:30 when the hiring manager came in. I actually went back in, as I was still at the mall. I had come from somewhere, so I was dressed nice, in a skirt, and talked to the manager. She asked if I could come in for an interview at two o'clock THE NEXT DAY. (Tuesday. I had read on glassdoor that they do their group interviews Tues and Thurs.) Before we went in, we were asked to pick our favorite scent. (Which, thanks to glassdoor, I knew about :) ) I picked the lavender chamomile sugar scrub. The manager had to come out to help an associate with something, saw me, and told me that we were waiting on another girl, so to just browse around the store. I browsed around, but stayed close to the back of the store where the manager was, so I could be there when she was ready. We went back and she introduced herself, and asked us to introduce ourselves. (A informal way of saying: Tell me about yourself) I highlighted my desire to be a nurse, a career which helps people. She asked what we thought the difference was between showing someone something, and selling. I said that you can be pushy when selling, but when you are showing someone something, and sharing with them what you like, it's like you're on the same level, and it's not pushy. The manager talked about what they were looking for. She asked why we want to work there. I talked about how I love the store and products, like how I will just go in to SMELL something and end up buying a bunch of stuff. She asked what we thought the difference was between a loyal customer and a satisfied customer. I said that you can be either or, or both. That a satisfied customer, is just satisfied, but not necessarily loyal. While a loyal customer is loyal to the store, comes back because they love the service and products. We were then asked How would you deal with an unhappy customer? I said that I've never had real job experience, but my family has owned a cleaning business for a long time, and being involved with that, I've learned that when someone is unhappy, you have to figure out why, and address that issue. And then when it comes to retail, you have to figure out WHY the customer is unhappy, and do your best to solve the problem. Then the manager said: So asking questions? And I said yes. The manager asked then if we had any questions. I didn't. She then talked about dress code: Jeans, Khakis, or black pants. White shirt, red shirt, or black shirt. Closed toed shoes, fashion sneakers like Converse, but no gym shoes. Then we had to sell her our products. I asked her if she was looking for anything specific, and she said no, just looking for something new. I said well, I would to share with you my favorite product. The lavender chamomile sugar scrub. I love the scent, its so calming and soothing, great to use before bed. It also exfoliates really well, but leaves your skin super soft and moisturized. I finished by saying I think if you want to try something new, you would love it. She high fived me! That made me happy. Then she said she was going to call our references, and we should wait. But then she changed her mind and said she would call us later that day. She asked about availability after that. I told her that I am 17, but am graduated from high school, so in my state, the labor laws don't apply to me, but I just wanted to let her know since there usually is an age requirement. I tried to smile the while time and keep eye contact, and it was easy to do. This Bath and Body has a big managerial team that is new, and so this manager said now is great time to come in, esp since it's the holidays. The whole interview lasted about 20 minutes, it felt like forever, I was so nervous! To me it sounded like we were definite yeses, if our references checked out. 2 and a half hours after my interview, the manager called me and told me she talked to human resources, and they will not give her any leeway to hire me, since I'm not 18. But she said to come back when I am 18, and apply again. But by that time, I will be starting my career in healthcare, so Bath and Body will be a no go.

      Interview

Very structured and easygoing. The hiring manager was very polite and asked important questions. I didn't hear back until about two weeks later, and I accepted the position. Ended up working there for 4 years and had an awesome experience.
