      Sales Associate Interview

      15 Dec 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Potomac Mills, VA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Bath & Body Works (Potomac Mills, VA) in June 2014

      Interview

I turned in my application on a Thursday and got a call back on Saturday afternoon. She told me that I would be a part of a group interview on the next Monday at 1:30 P.M. I arrived at 1:15 and the people on the floor told me that I had to wait for the other interviewees to arrive and to pick out my favorite product sample in the mean time (I knew that I had to "sell" this product to the interviewing manager). I waited with another girl for 15-20 minutes until some very confused workers finally decided to call the manager out to get us. At the door in the back of the store appears, yells to another employee "is that them?" tells the employee to bring us to her. She then tells us to follow her back into what appeared to be a storage area with boxes piled from the ground to the ceiling into a small room that looked to only fit a maximum of one person at a time. She has all three of us cram into that room. She starts out by spending 5 minutes looking for our applications (and tries to accuse me and the other girl of not turning them in/not having our names on them, turns out they were attached to an inventory clip-board. Organized, huh?). this was a breeze for me, until I suggested a travel "trio" set as a gift for a friend. At this point she cuts me off and says that their main priority is making the biggest sales, and to always try to push the full-sized body wash, lotion, and spray to someone before trying to sell anything else. She then proceeds to tell me that some of her employees could seriously "use a lesson from me." After the other girl goes, she goes on a rant about how she has spent "3 years in this company so I am experienced and know everything about sales" and how we "had so much to learn before we could be successful in this company" so on and so forth. She told us that we would have to be comfortable with role play because that would be an every day part of learning how to make better sales. Another employee was working stocks right outside that room. She yells something at her that I don't remember and says "working hard to set an example I see?"and gives us a "wouldn't you just love to be entitled enough to work here?" look. Her unprofessional attitude and ways during this interview reached their peak when we began discussing whether or not we would get a call back. She said "interview is done know, doesnt mean a thing anymore. Im only going to hire you based on your availibility and references." Since this was going to be my second job this was a bit of an issue. "We are only hiring now to to have staff for the holiday season, we need you every single day for black friday and chrsitmas, you have nothing for us if you have another job." "Well, I dont work for this job during the fall and winter so this is perfect." "Well we probably wont hire you if you arent availible 14 hours on Saturday and 12 hours Sunday" The other girl chimes in and says "I can't work in the mornings on Sundays because I have to go to church." To which, I kid you not, the manager replies " Im sorry honey but the retail world doesn't have time for people who want to go to church on Sundays." Wow, never read Title VII of the Civil RIghts Act have you? And for a business that is notorious for hiring at minimum wage and only giving them 2 shifts a week at the most, you're telling me you're unwilling to hire someone with another job or someone who needs a measly hour on Sundays for religious obligations? The fact that they didn't even call me back, someone with as much experience and professionalism as i do (after telling me that i could give their current employees lessons) tells me that the priority is on how much money they can make and how miserable they can make their employees by making them have completely clear availability and ripping them off in hours and low pay. No thank you. I'll never try to get a job there again nor will I shop there ever again. They had horrific customer service to begin with, this experience definitely showed me were that originates.

      Question 1

Since I was on here before I went into the interview, I already knew that they asked you to pick out a product and send it to them, so I was prepared. That was probably the hardest question

Very structured and easygoing. The hiring manager was very polite and asked important questions. I didn't hear back until about two weeks later, and I accepted the position. Ended up working there for 4 years and had an awesome experience.
