I applied online. I interviewed at Boluda Corporación in Apr 2024
Interview
The interview panel consisted of a senior Tug Master and a female HR representative. The initial questions were standard for a maritime role, covering my career history and competency-based scenarios, resulting in an average difficulty overall.
However, the dynamic quickly became unprofessional when the senior Master focused heavily on outdated gender stereotypes. I was asked highly inappropriate questions, including how I would "cope" on a small vessel with an all-male crew and what it was like being a woman at sea.
The HR representative looked visibly horrified when he asked these questions, proving she knew they were entirely inappropriate in real time, yet she sat through the entire interview and did absolutely nothing to intervene or correct the behavior.
Furthermore, when I mentioned during the interview that I knew an internal candidate from college, both interviewers looked at each other in visible discomfort and strictly questioned whether I had told him I was interviewing.
I was ultimately rejected under the false pretense of being 'recently qualified,' despite holding my ticket for several years. The job went to the male internal candidate who qualified years after me. When I formally emailed HR to complain about the blatant bias during the interview, the department completely ignored the paper trail and didn't even offer an apology. A toxic 'boys' club' culture from the top down.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How would you cope on a small vessel where the rest of the crew are entirely men, and what is it like being a woman at sea?
Phone call then zoom interview. Lady interviewing was a bit intense. I declined the job offer after having a think about it as pay wasn’t that good and said I wasted their time.

Question 1
Previous experience, work ethic, why I want to join
