I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Citi (New York, NY) in July 2024
Interview
Very disappointing and unprofessional experience. I interviewed with 3 employees over Zoom: the role's manager and 2 colleague analysts. The manager prioritized my personal finance habits over my work credentials and skills. He asked for my personal investment decisions/information. Did not feel relevant and that perhaps a white male candidate (same as the 3 interviewers) would not have received the same scrutiny. They tell me openly they're working unstainable unpaid overtime. Then they tell me Excel is their only tool in a "finance data quality analytics" team. No Tableau/Power BI, no Alteryx, no SQL/Python/coding, just... nothing. You're paying up to $200k to add another spreadsheet mangler to the team when you could solve 80% of your automation and manual tasks with software licenses that are FAR cheaper. My mind was certainly made up there. Then they casually drop that the NYC commute is via the G train because the office is in Long Island City. They publish all roles as Manhattan based. Nice little bait and switch there. If I can't walk to a client meal in Midtown/take a break in Bryant Park/walk over for a show after work, you ARE NOT located in "New York, NY". And to round it out as I'm asking my questions in the allotted time at the end, the analysts demurely state they're uncomfortable being honest in front of their manager, Aside from the red flag for me, they place the onus on me like its MY fault I'm asking them questions in front of the people their company scheduled on the call. As a nice punctuation mark on the whole process, after 2 months (1 month of complete radio silence since giving them my time for 3 interviews) I get an automated email with subject line "Application Update" that states "the role you interviewed for is no longer available" (!) Citi, if you interview a human being, its the bare minimum bar that a human being deliver your decision. How cowardly, avoidant, and truly unprofessional to close the process with an email that its just no longer available. I wish you the employees you deserve.
