Phone call with a Board Member, then a meeting with five people: 3 board members, one lead staff, on community partner organization representative.
Although I knew one of the Board members from the local community and I'd interacted with another board member, the group felt stiff. I wondered if they'd already made their decision and I was simply an interview that they felt obliged to make given my relationship with another Board member and my prior experience as a client of their business service programs.
In any event, it didn't feel like a group of people that I wanted to be with and so I shifted into a consulting mode at some point in the interview, realizing that I really didn't have an interest in working with this team.
Perhaps it was that only one person really had strong interpersonal skills.
I did have a follow-up phone call with the Board Chair who had been very surprised by my consulting stance and directness in the interview. Needless to say, I didn't get the offer and I'm glad...I got a much better offer a couple of months later where the "fit" was perfect!
