      Customer Support Engineer Interview

      6 Feb 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Demandbase (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

First step was the initial screen by the recruiter, asked about resume, tell me about yourself sort of thing. After that came a timed take home technical screen which was pretty basic DOM manipulation with HTML, CSS, JS. Then came a video interview with the hiring manager, which went really well. He asked me mostly Customer Service type questions and about my experience. Then the final interview was the onsite where I met 5 people , each form a different department. I though it went really well, but I guess they didn't. In the end , they said hey wanted someone with more SASS experience, which they knew I didn't have by looking at my resume, but hey you're allowed to change your mind and you're allowed to not like me. Ha!

      Interview

During my phone screen, my interviewer was asking me questions that made it obvious he was worried I would not stay long at the position. I thought I answered them well, and he said he would send me an assignment to do since he wanted to move me to the next round. Yet as he was telling me that I had made it to the second round, he sounded incredibly detached and as if he were just going thru the motions. I suspected he was going to flake on me. I was right. He never bothered sending over the assignment I was supposed to do. Lying to a candidate about moving them to a next round is incredibly disrespectful and unprofessional. I’d rather he just said they would consider me for the next round rather than lie that I had made it. Apply elsewhere.

      Interview

recruiter phone -> 1 hr take home -> manager -> onsite. The interviewers during the onsite were mostly technical questions. My concern was with the feedback: "there was an overarching concern at your ability to be nimble, and to deal with the constant ambiguity". There were no behavioral questions regarding this, and if the team really was concerned about my ability to be nimble or deal with constant ambiguity, it could have been addressed directly in the interviews. I am more concerned about the superficiality of the interviewers and how they reached those assumptions. I don't think I would feel comfortable applying again in the future.
