I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at EngineerX (Auckland, Auckland) in Mar 2026
Interview
The interview was conducted by a senior engineer and another interviewer. It started with behavioral questions. Then the senior engineer moved on to the technical part and asked me to describe the architecture of projects I’ve worked on. I gave a general overview, but there wasn’t much in-depth discussion — it felt like they just wanted me to describe it without asking follow-up questions.
The technical discussion itself was somewhat scattered. The recruiter had told me there would be no coding test, but in the end, they still gave me a dependency-parsing problem and asked me to write it out by hand on the spot. That felt a bit inconsistent. From their micro-expressions, it seemed like they were somewhat pleased with this setup, but I honestly couldn’t see the value of writing out such an algorithm in this context.
I explained my approach, including the data structures and algorithm design, and mentioned that I had actually implemented something similar in a real project. I also pointed out that for pure algorithm testing, AI arguably has an advantage over humans anyway.
Overall, I’m quite skeptical about their intention in asking me to attend the onsite interview. The experience was fairly average.
