I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Equitable Advisors (Woodbury, NY) in Aug 2011
Interview
Pretty easy interview process. They like to hire as much as possible to hit their monthly and yearly quotas. As long as you're competent, personable and promising, you're most likely in.
Licensed and/or proven path of sales experience and success is ideal.
Not insanely formal in terms of questions. Also depends what manager is interviewing you.

Question 1
They will want to qualify to see if you have people in your family/close friends who are high net worth who could be your first batch of clients and make you some money to start off.
Incredibly easy, they aim to hire anyone with a pulse to sell life insurance and annuities. Beware of the comp structure and ask about the bonus and override your manager will get from all of your work.
Very laid back. I was never asked any question about my job experience or any of the sorts. The interview consisted of a 15 minute conversation of small talk and getting to know the VP of the team you will be working under. The second stage was at the office location where you learn about the company and meet some of the staff.

Interview
Very easy interview, not too many questions they ask more listening to what they have to say about the role. Just know that you’ll have to find prospects on your own when starting off
