      Wealth Management Associate Interview

      8 May 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Philadelphia, PA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Equitable Advisors (Philadelphia, PA) in May 2023

      Interview

They were very enthusiastic about interviewing me, I had applied online and messaged the recruiter on LinkedIn which he was very impressed by. Set up a quick screening call during which he asked me to tell me a little bit about myself and then spent the rest of the time pitching the position. I realized quickly the position was very different than what was initially described and sounded more like sales for teachers' annuities. Before the first interview they sent me an application to a different position "Financial Professional" they wanted me to apply for. During the interview they asked a handful of questions about me and then launched into a 45-minute presentation about the company structure and compensation. I can only describe it as a flagrant MLM-type scam in which they set you up to fail and hope to make a couple bucks off you before you do. They do not pay for your licenses, they do not pay you for the first 6 months, and you need to bring in 15 clients before you get a very small bonus and a $24k annual base salary - barely enough to live off of. They start you off selling 304(b) plans to teachers and expect you to cold-call, email, and show up in person at schools to convince people to let you manage their money. They also expect you to recruit your personal contacts off the bat and encourage harping on your friends, family, and partner's coworkers. The entire experience felt very predatory and I truly feel sorry for anyone who falls for the scam, though I'm not sure how anyone would even be able to afford the first 6 months of full time work without pay or benefits. They asked me for a second interview, but before they did they wanted me to start a background check, which I'm fairly certain they expected me to pay for. I obviously turned it down.

      Application

The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Equitable Advisors (Fort Worth, TX) in Mar 2026

      Interview

People were very responsive and kind, however I only ended up meeting/interviewing with the same person 3 times, which felt a bit weird to me. I ended up meeting the EVP for my offer which was great, but I really wanted to meet more of the team.
