      Staff Data Scientist Interview

      12 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Etsy in Aug 2023

      Interview

Interview process was like this for me: 1. Recruiter call 2. Tech screen (coding) 3. Virtual onsite Tech screen was a 1hr coding session on HackerRank. Virtual onsite took 2 days for 5 interviews (45min-1hr). There were 2 ML related interviews, 1 coding, 1 product interview, and 1 HM interview. At the end of virtual onsite, there was a chat with the recruiter (15min). Good things first. Every interviewer on both tech screen and virtual onsite was very nice. I thought the questions were all reasonable and not so nitpicking. As the interview proceeds, I really wanted to work with these people. There was a recruiter call before the virtual onsite for prepping and that was helpful. Now the bad things. Virtual onsite is a little too long. Coding session in onsite is not really necessary, as it is quite similar to what's tested in the tech screen. And here's the worst part. Communication after virtual onsite was terrible. At the end of virtual onsite, the recruiter told me he would contact me on the next day or early next week, saying the team is quite quick on making decisions. By Tuesday next week, he did not contact me, so I pinged him on Wednesday. He told me that they decided on another candidate for the staff position that I was applying for, but HM wants to know if I'm interested in the senior position. I replied yes and he wrote me that HM would probably schedule a call. In the same email he also shared the compensation info including equity and bonus. At this point I thought I would get an offer for the senior position. However, in the next email the recruiter wrote "We're waiting to make a final decision until Monday as we have a couple other candidates that are wrapping up the process this week. Are you OK to hang on until Monday?" (verbatim) ...What? Then what was that anticipated HM call and comp info for? However, there was nothing I could do and told him that I would wait until Monday. I spent another restless weekend. Of course the recruiter didn't contact me on Monday, so I pinged him on Tuesday. Within an hour, he replied back just saying I was rejected. Honestly, I feel I was being fooled. Throughout the job search process for the last several months, I've had several bitter experiences of expecting an offer and then resulted in a huge disappointment. I have been trying very hard not to be pleased too soon, even though I thought I did a good job at the virtual onsite. The way the recruiter communicated to me unnecessarily agitated me for nothing. It was at least disrespectful, and I'm even thinking he's making fun of me. In the current tough job market, there are an infinite number of candidates and Etsy is taking advantage of it. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst ever candidate experiences from a company that I was starting to love.
