      Educational Program Coordinator Interview

      22 Oct 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Jose, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at FLYHIGH Group (San Jose, CA) in Oct 2019

      Interview

It takes a couple of days including phone call interviews and in-person interviews. The hiring team and staff are really unprofessional. The interview process took 2 hours to finish with two people, when I say two people I mean interviewed by two different people at on hour for each and they were asking the almost same questions. During the interview, I felt I got discriminated. This is a Chinese recruiting agency, they are hiring people in bilingual. First, the interviewer asked me to speak in English, then we switched to Chinese. The interviewed said this to me " your accent doesn't sound like mainland Chinese" I was like, are you a language coach or what. The job description doesn't say you have to speak in standard mandarin. After that, she started to steal knowledge, she asked about my opinion on how to run her program or business instead of asking me about my skills and experience. For the second interviewer, he asked me for more stupid questions, he saw my resume showed I stayed in the college for 6 years. So he asked me why it was so long in college? don't you think this question is too personal? what if it was my family event or personal ill. I told him that because major changed. then he kept asking me why change XYZ major to ABC major? because XYZ's major is his major. Then he asked me to give him the reasons why I changed XYZ major to ABC major. It's actually none of his business. This company wasted my 2 hours time to chat when they never think of hiring me. They don't know how to do interview candidates.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Tell me three reasons why you were not interested in XYZ major? How much your current job pay you?

Dear candidate, First, we would thank you for taking the time to describe your experience interviewing with our company. We welcome and encourage any feedback, positive or negative. We also would like this interview experience to be beneficial on you and your further career. 1. A standard interview process would typically include 2-3 rounds, initial phone screening, onsite in-person interviews with 2-3 interviewers, from HR or hiring managers. 2. A standard onsite in-person interview duration is typically in the range of 30-60 minutes by each interviewer. 3. Standard interview questions could very well be inquired by all interviewers. For example, “Please introduce yourself, your education and work experience.” “Please give me an example when you encountered a challenge, how did you overcome it?” In fact, the same questions may be asked by multiple interviewers on purpose, just to test if the candidate’s performance is consistent. 4. FlyHigh is a legal entity registered in the state of California. It’s an American company, NOT a Chinese company. Our headquarter is in Silicon Valley. This is all public information that can be verified on the state’s website. We highly encourage you to do research before making any statement, because it may reduce your own credibility. 5. The position you applied for is “Education Program Coordinator—Chinese Speaking”. As the job title states clearly on job board, we are looking for bilingual candidates. Therefore, processing the Chinese languages skills is a must rather than a plus. When candidates apply for this position, they should be ready to be tested. 6. In assessing one’s ability and knowledge to be capable of the job, asking about candidates' industry insights is one of the best ways. For example, if a candidate is in an interview for a experienced marketing position, the interviewee will constantly ask his/her prior marketing experience. And in a sales interview for a computer product, being asked to “sell” a computer on the spot is a common practice. Same as our case, the interview for a teaching position included the questions on how to handle a 20-student class. This is a typical interview question called scenario, helping interviewers well identify if the candidate has as solid experience and skills as JD requires in real circumstances. Please be aware that such method is common, not “stealing” knowledge at all. 7. When candidates' resume show signs of unusual experience, interviewers usually ask about that to ensure candidates' integrity or background. The question about your one-year longer to complete college is simply get to know more about educational background. It's not necessary to grant it negative or inferior. Spending 6 years to complete a degree is NOT a shame and could very well be a positive experience. For example, one may take additional 2-year gap semesters to test a startup idea, or to travel around the world that recruiters have experienced many times before. Let alone a family issue, you could simply reply it was for family reasons and do not have to share more details. This would be enough and won’t impact your interview negatively at all. In the future, we advise you to prepare to explain every single detail on your resume. 8. Academic major change is a significant change in one’s educational experience, just like changing jobs. Asking why changing jobs or majors is an extremely relevant question to show how candidates manage challenges and changes in career and life. The suggested approach is to explain why you decided to change and how you achieved it, which will help interviewers deeply understand your capability, motivation and personality. Thinking it not relevant of business does not help. In Silicon Valley, we embrace failure. Every time we face it, we learn from inside out and then improve. It is strongly recommended that you cherish every minute of interviews and every word from interviewers. FlyHigh is professional HR consolation as well as talent acquisition expertise. We are dedicated to empowering talent and we do hope our suggestions will help. Wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
