Interview
I applied online. They contacted me with a quick 15 min video interview, followed by a 90 min in-person interview. Within two mins of the in-person interview, it became obvious that the Executive Director was completely uninterested in me as a candidate. I'm not sure why they would waste their time, or mine, with a 90 min interview when the decision had clearly already been made. The interview was patronizing, and at times blatantly rude. He made it abundantly clear that my background was insufficient and that coming from the private sector, he believed I would be unable to adapt to a non-profit (seriously, why bring me in at all then?) I was equally unimpressed in them. One question I always ask during my interviews is, "Tell me about a time when you congratulated a subordinate on a job well done." In his 40 years of experience, he failed to come up with a single example, not one, of a time when he slapped an employee on the back and said, "Good job." I feel sorry for his staff. Everybody needs positive feedback once in a while, especially when they earn it. Ultimately he shrugged his shoulders and admitted it is something he needs to work on. He went on to say that it was a really quiet office (which is fine), but then added, "Unless someone is talking on the phone, there is no talking in this office. There will be no 'water cooler talk' here. You show up, put your head down, you do your 8 or 10 hours, then go home." That's exactly what he said. YIKES!!! There were other warning signs too, but I digress. I knew at that point that no offer would be extended, and even if they did, I would not accept it. We finished the interview out of mutual politeness. Going into this interview I was willing to accept a 35% pay cut from my previous position because I actually believe that Historicorps provides a tremendously valuable service and because it sounded like fun. But like the other reviewer noted, they may be doing good work, but they are completely uninterested in anybody other than themselves. The position was deleted two days later and converted to an unpaid internship. May God have mercy on the soul of whatever poor college student walks into that position.

Question 1
What do you consider to be the voice of Historicorps?

Interview
I had a phone interview with HistoriCorps, and could tell they were uninterested in me as a candidate. I don’t know why you would waste your time interviewing someone you’re clearly uninterested in, but my suspicion was confirmed when over a month later, after I had already accepted a different offer, they sent me a rejection email and called me by the entirely wrong name. I’m not sure how you type in someone’s email address with their full name in it, and still manage to call them something else entirely. Don’t waste your time with this rude and clearly unorganized organization. They may do great work, but they’re clearly completely uninterested in anyone but themselves.
