    Casual Sales Assistant Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Hype DC (Cremorne, Victoria) in June 2019.

    Interview

I applied online and had a phone call regarding a group interview 1-2 weeks later. The phone call included some basic questions related to customer service, why I want to work with Hype, and my availability. The group interview was a few days later in Cremorne. I arrived about 30 minutes early and sat in the waiting room with lots of other interviewees - my advice here would be to be friendly and open to chat to the people around you to both make a good impression and also make the whole experience a little more pleasant/less daunting for yourself. Also, dress in ‘casual street wear’ (heavy focus on street-style) and it can’t hurt to wear some great sneakers. Personally I’d wear some fun ones, but it’s really up to you. When it was time we were all led into a presentation-style room with a big projector and chairs semi-circled facing it. There were 3 interviewers including the Area Manager - they were very relaxed and spoke casually, so they weren’t overly intimidating or anything. There were probably 20-25 of us which is the real reason I put a ‘neutral’ experience for this interview: the whole thing was pretty good but it felt extremely hard to show yourself or your abilities when there were so many of us. What adds to this is there isn’t much opportunity for you to be talking aside from when they go around and ask you each a set question, so you have to make that count and show your personality here. Obviously I’m not the one hiring here but it seems like the people who most fitted the brand and were humourous and very confident won out in these situations. Anyway, after we sat down we filled out some paperwork quickly and then begun the actual interview. The first question was ‘Introduce yourself and why you want to work at Hype’: probably say something more than simply ‘I love shoes’ because a lot of people mentioned that. Next we split into pairs and were told to get to know some interesting facts about our partner - you will be explaining to the interviewers why they should hire your partner. Just be casual and lighthearted and probably throw a few job-related things in the mix - and again, humour helps get you noticed here. So following that we split into groups and were given a shoe to ‘sell creatively to the group’: this meant through song or skit or anything, but it only has to last for a minute max. Obviously they are looking for cooperation here but also it doesn’t hurt to get some laughs from everyone. After this we sat down again and were quickly asked ‘which celebrity would you be for a day if you could’ - this was quick-fire and I’m not sure how much it means to your ‘image’ - perhaps they’re more impressed by choices that align more with the brand, but also they stressed everyone being individual as important so it might be a totally casual question. And lastly they asked if we had any questions for them; I would highly suggest having a question to ask here because they told us we would find out if we were accepted that night and I think it’s a good time to speak up so you don’t blend into the background, especially when they are deciding so soon after the interview. Come prepared with one that’s appropriate and not too random - it could be about the shoes themselves, what Hype means to them, the culture of the store, how they think customer service should be, how to progress through the ranks etc. Following all this the interview ended and we could go and ask the interviewers more specific questions if we wanted or leave. I also brought my resume and left it on the clipboard that they had us fill out in the beginning - I feel like this can’t hurt. Overall the interview took about an hour and a half. Ultimately I would say this: it was a pleasant experience, and everyone was really nice, but there were so many of us it felt very difficult to stand out - take every chance you get to showcase your personality, because I’d say it’s the most effective way to get the job. :)

    Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at Hype DC (Sydney) in May 2019.

    Interview

I did my interview at the Sydney hq for accent group. We all were waiting in the lobby till they led us to a meeting room where we were sat and filled out a form for our details. After they collected those sheets and out resumes we were told to go in pairs and introduce them. They wanted to know their name, what they are doing this weekend, who they are inspired by. Then we went into groups of 4-5 depending on the number of applicants and were told to sell one of our shoes.
