      Human Resources Generalist Interview

      29 Apr 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Maywood, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Kroger (Maywood, IL) in Apr 2022

      Interview

I should’ve paid attention to the first red flag when I received an interview invitation, responded, and the recruiter asked “which job did you apply for?” No hello. No greeting. No knowledge of my candidacy despite contacting me. The first round interview was rescheduled due to them not clarifying if it would be virtual or phone. SECOND RED FLAG. It went ok after a couple of failed scheduling attempts, but the interviewer was not totally clear on role expectations and was unfamiliar with local HR laws for the particular region she was filling the role in. She also made comments about preventing employees from unionizing, which is illegal. THIRD RED FLAG. During the final round interview, 2 of the 3 interviewers were late and looked immediately annoyed when they arrived. FOURTH RED FLAG. The one that was on time didn’t know why the others were late and if we should start with or without them. Clearly they hadn’t communicated with each other. All the interviewers read questions from a multiple page, scripted document that they were unfamiliar with which was totally awkward and felt disconnecting. Only one asked probing follow up questions but they were irrelevant, and none were able to clarify the questions they were asking and seemed to be put off by being asked questions as if an interview isn’t a two way process. I was initially told their questions would be behavioral based. None of them were behavior related. They were skills based. They also were not appropriate for the level of the role. FIFTH RED FLAG. Lastly, at the end of the interview I was told I would receive a decision by end of day. I followed up immediately afterwards thanking them for their time and then…. crickets. They never followed up by end of day as they said they would, nor the next day or the day after that. It’s now been two weeks and I still never got a decision one way or the other. SIXTH RED FLAG. I can’t believe companies are still ghosting candidates in this market that we’re in. Don’t waste your time with companies that practice ghosting candidates after you’ve invested 2-3 rounds engaging their interview process. Not only is this tacky, unprofessional business practices, but it also shows they clearly don’t value you or your time as a candidate and the energy that you put into the process. If they don't value the candidate experience, that means they won’t value you as an employee either. I should’ve listened to the other reviews and my own intuition about this company throughout the process. Clearly this was not a loss on my end.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked questions around data I’ve used in my hiring processes (this is already indicated on my resume), if I was the sole manager of recruitment campaigns/projects (also clearly indicated on my resume already), and my experience with managing budgets. The job description indicated nothing about managing budgets. To me it seems that they are actually in need of an HR Director and want to get the most bang for their buck. BIG RED FLAG. This means the position is classified wrong and they will have unclear, unrealistic expectations for the person in this role while paying them less money. They quoted a salary of $75k, which is ok for an HR Generalist but NOT for an HR Director of a large organization such as Kroger.

      Interview

Applied online and got cold called to schedule a time for another phone screening. Unfortunately, this initial call lasted ONE HOUR of the recruiter just talking about themselves. By the time we talked during our scheduled time the next day, they had nothing to talk about so it lasted 2 minutes. I was supposed to get moved on to the next step with the hiring manager but I never heard back. I didn’t even have a phone number/email to follow up.
