I interviewed for a role with Merck’s Inhouse Consulting team and was genuinely excited about the opportunity, especially given the company’s strong reputation and the positive feedback I’ve heard from friends who work there.
Unfortunately, my experience with HR left me disappointed. Throughout the call, the HR representative appeared disengaged—only showing a side view on video, making no eye contact, and frequently pausing the conversation to talk to others in the room, asking me to “hold on” mid-discussion. It felt unprofessional and dismissive.
When I explained my current compensation structure (which is fairly common in the region), she responded with visible confusion and what came across as a condescending expression, saying she didn’t understand it—even though I made an effort to clarify politely. I felt the tone and attitude lacked basic respect and professionalism, especially for a first-round interview.
This experience felt out of sync with the respectful and collaborative culture I’ve heard Merck is known for. I still believe Merck is a great company, but I hope they take steps to ensure a more respectful and professional candidate experience in the future.
