Recruiter screening call followed by a technical interview with a senior engineer. The second stage was going to be a conversation about the past project, unfortunately turned into a grilling.
Did not enjoy the vibe of that call but it helped me to realise their on the lookout for individual contributors, not team players.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Describe details of the last project you worked on. Any technology used in the implementation will be dissected in granular detail.
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Monzo Bank (London, England) in Mar 2026
Interview
The interview process began with an initial HR screening, followed by a one-hour technical conversation with engineers. The discussion was focused on past projects rather than algorithmic questions, with an emphasis on understanding technical decisions, trade-offs, and ownership.
The interview felt conversational and collaborative, with interviewers asking detailed follow-up questions to explore system design, scalability, and real-world engineering challenges. There was a strong focus on backend systems, reliability, and how candidates approach problem-solving in production environments.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The questions were primarily based on my past experience. I was asked to walk through a recent project in detail, including system architecture, design decisions, and trade-offs.
Follow-up questions focused on areas such as scalability, concurrency, caching strategies, and handling real-world production scenarios. There was also discussion around collaboration, ownership, and how I approach problem-solving within a team.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Monzo Bank (London, England) in Mar 2026
Interview
It went well, mostly discussed about a project I worked on , and they proceeded to
Ask questions based on the what was discussed, like why I made those decisions and what I’ll do better if I’m building on a bigger scale .
