      Software Engineer Interview

      30 June 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Neo4j (London, England) in June 2020

      Interview

TLDR: A pathetic experience, dishonesty and playing with candidates time by giving them coding exercise and give any reason to reject which really shows they don't even wanna hire in the first place. Pathetic seriously. After an introductory call with the HR got a code challenge with very simple typescript exercise. Honestly there was nothing much in the code challenge and with almost 9 years of experience in Javascript it was super easy. After constantly followingup with the HR got an email that it was not strong enough. Please note it achieved the required efficiency and performance as what was expected in the exercise but still they said "not strong" enough inspite of matching their expectations is really really unbelievable. Moreover HR mentioned that they wanted someone with GraphQL experience (which I had) but still believed that I didn't so they said because I do not have GraphQL experience (that to wrong assumption) they rejected the exercise. The bigger point is if they thought I don't have GraphQL experience then why waste a candidate's time asking him to complete a full code challenge only to say "hey you know what you dont have experience in so and so hence your code challenge won't even be looked at and is rejected". I, with all my sincere honesty, would suggest to any self respecting developer to NOT WASTE TIME interviewing for Neo4j and instead interview for companies who respect candidates time and would given an honest feedback and bother to get all the information before giving them code challenge. Companies such as Neo4j thinks that just because they are hiring they can play with a candidates time in any way they want so places such as glassdoor act as a helping tool to skip bad apples such as Neo4j (with poor salaries and enormous expectation with nothing much in return as well). Honestly a complete waste of time as my code was not even looked and instead the thing which could have been clarified in the first round was instead brought after all the efforts of code challenge (and that to wrongly). Really a waste of time and an atmost dis-respect to a candidate considering them disposable entities.

We are very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience applying at Neo4j. We know that it can be a lot of work to apply, since we have high standards for finding the right match to our openings. We appreciate the time you took to complete the coding exercise, and we would not have spent so much time on you if we did not find your skills and talents interesting. We wish you the very best in your career. Kindest Regards Neo4j

      Anonymous employee
      London, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Neo4j (London, England) in Aug 2025

      Interview

The process started with a call with Talent Acquisition, followed by a discussion with the Team Lead on my experience and familiarity with graph databases and related tech. I was then given a week for a take-home assignment in any tech stack, followed by a session to expand on the solution with live coding to add features. The final rounds were behavioral interviews with the Hiring Manager and the VP of HR. Overall, the interview process felt focused and purposeful. The team provided clarity around the day-to-day responsibilities and expectations, which was very helpful. Sam supported me as the talent acquisition partner throughout. My first application for a team did not move forward, but Sam kept in touch and later connected me to another opportunity. He also helped me understand what to expect in each interview round and was very quick in providing feedback. I felt encouraged and supported throughout. From my experience, the company seems to foster a fantastic corporate culture.
