      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Octopus Energy (Leicester, England) in Dec 2020

      Interview

The whole interview process is quite intense there are quite a few stages: • Informal call about the role. I've applied through indeed and got a phone call from instant impact. The girl I spoke to was really lovely and friendly. The call lasted around ~30min and more or less we were just having a chat about logistics of the role and if you are what they are potentially looking for. She asked me why I applied etc.  • Skype interview.  Just general interview questions. It was with the same girl who I've had the informal call with. • Discovery Day. This lasted around 3h. It was done via zoom. A lot of team exercises. The girl from instant impact sent me tips before hand, I highly anticipate following them, as everything came up, that she told me about. One thing I'll say, is that normal team work skills and qualities that employers usually look (active listening, communication, decision making, problem solving etc) for doesn't seem to work here. It's quite unclear what they are looking for exactly, and it seems that people who were pushy, overtaking conversations etc were seen as the ones who are doing it right. • Verbal reasoning and numerical tests. Make sure you REVISE a ton for this. Verbal reasoning is not that bad, but maths is a tricky one. You literally have a 1min to answer a question. I can't really understand why maths test is needed for this role, especially quite intense one. It's GCSE level, but when you've been out of school for a while and have to answer those q under tremendous time pressure, its not as easy as you have 0 time for any mistakes. Also, you can't see your results, not even how good or bad you've done, which I believe is ridiculous, you should be given at least an idea of your performance. I understand the need for them to find the right person, but such an intense interview process for a role that offers £18500 per year (which is actually if divided by the amount of h. you'll be working, works out to be a bit lower then minimum h. rate) seems a bit over the top.

Hi there, Thanks for leaving this feedback. It’s a valuable review and worth my consideration. I also really appreciate all the time and effort you put into the recruitment process with us. I know that won’t have been insignificant. In terms of some of the issues you raised, I hope the following will help explain the context and our approach in a bit more detail: - The process is thorough, intense, and with quite a few stages: absolutely! Being a hyper growth scale up making the impact we’ve been trying to make, means we need to make the best decisions when it comes to who joins our team. Whilst we have adapted our process, it remains as you’ve described so that we continue to succeed both in the UK and across the world. People are at the centre of how we succeed. Thoroughness in our process matters. - Discovery Day: we’re looking for people like you described in terms of being a team player and a good communicator. We don’t over interfere in allowing candidates to get on with the task at hand during the DD on purpose. We are incredibly aware of pushiness and it’s something that doesn’t aid candidates, as it’s not our style. Hence, what you observed will unlikely have aided candidates. - Numerical & Verbal Reasoning Tests: both tests help us to understand skill set that is needed for a complex and fast moving role where you need to grapple with complex issues around billing and metering. The Energy Specialist role covers every element of Ops and that is what makes it unique and challenging. We are super flexible for candidates that are longer out of school, as we know some people might be out of practice on this stuff. In terms of not having access to your scores, now that you have raised it, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be given it. If you want yours, pleased reach out to your Talent Partner and Instant Impact and reference this conversation and I will make sure you get it. I’ll also make sure that we offer the scores moving forward as you have raised a good point here. - Salary and compensation: the salary is above the UK minimum wage. All permanent employees are gifted share options, in what is the UK’s fastest growing energy supplier and tech company, making an impact in new markets around the world. We are one of the very few double unicorns in the UK. As such, we all share in the success of the business and this gives all the team real value. Thanks again for your feedback. Wishing you all the best with your future job search. Cheers, James Doyle Head of Ops

I applied online. I interviewed at Octopus Energy (Brighton, England) in Dec 2021

      Interview

The interview process was long but enjoyable. I was first contacted by very helpful and kind lady named Naomi. Who would check in on me between each stage. I was sent maths and English tests before the next stage which was a discovery day and group interview process. After that was one last interview with the recruitment agent for the team you are applying for.

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Octopus Energy (Warwick, West Midlands, England) in June 2021

      Interview

A very thorough process, really centered around getting to know applicants on an individual basis, analysing how they would best fit in with the team. First 1-1 interview. Numerical and Literacy Reasoning Tests (more difficult than i originally expected - recommend practicing and going over Maths GCSE bitesize) Then Discovery Day, where you interact with other applicants. Split into: Ice Breaker, Customer Service Questions / Scenarios, Research on Octopus (Partnerships, Social Media, etc), Q+A Session, Individual Interview. If successful Final Call - discussing the role in further detail anything that was missed during the Discovery Day.
