      Director, Site Merchandising Interview

      3 June 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Old Navy (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2020

      Interview

I have never had a more pleasant interview experience than I did with Old Navy! They were very detailed beforehand in providing me with information I would need to prepare and a schedule of who I would be meeting with throughout the day of. The offices are so funky and fun - it felt like walking into an Old Navy store with music playing and bright colors everywhere. I got the royal treatment with a hug from the recruiter (this was pre-covid!), a tour of the building, and snacks, lunch, anything I needed to feel comfortable. I met with 5 different people, all super friendly and open. I was asked to present a SWOT analysis and everyone seemed to be very interested in my initial ideas and perspective on their site. I did feel like for a director position, it would have been better for me to have spent more time with the VP/hiring manager, but was only given 45 minutes. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed they did not offer me the position.

      Question 1

They asked me a lot of situational questions - tell me about a time you made a mistake, what's your biggest accomplishment, etc. I spent a large chunk of the time going over my SWOT, and also tried to leave time for my own questions. With almost each person I felt that I ran out of time. One of the girls was solely focused on questions focused on my learning style - what was a time you had to learn something difficult (or something like that). I understand they want to know how quickly I will pick things up, but I felt it didn't need to be 30 minutes spent on how I learn things.
