      Medical Representative Trainee Interview

      23 June 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Tampa, FL
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Progressive Insurance (Tampa, FL) in June 2016

      Interview

05/20/16 - Applied online 05/24/16 - Phone interview request 05/31/16 - Phone interview 06/01/16 - Background investigation began 06/09/16 - Scheduled interview with manager 06/13/16 - Interview with manager 06/23/16 - Offered position!!! Progressive's application and interview process is extremely thorough and can be intimidating at times but not out of the ordinary for an insurance company of this caliber. I can honestly say that they take their time to get to know you and make sure that you are the best fit for the position and know exactly what the position entails. My first piece of advice would be to study their website because everything you need to have successful interviews in there. They want you to answer the interview questions using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) format and they have outlined how to do that on the website. For the most part they are all behavior based questions. My advice is to look over your resume and think about your work history and how you SPECIFICALLY handled different situations that occur in the workplace. I also suggest you look through their entire website, they hold great pride in their core values and their community service. The phone interview was about 35 minutes long and I was asked some general questions. We then went through my resume and work experience and my education. Then I was asked 3 behavior based questions answered in the STAR format. The in-person interview was about an hour and half only because it felt more like a conversation than an interview towards the end. I was interviewed by the Managing Director of Claims. It was very intense; the more nervous you are the more intense it will be. I was asked a series of STAR questions and my only suggestion is to be as specific as possible. At the end I was given ample time to ask questions and he was very open and honest with me about the position and what it is really like to work for Progressive. On a side note, they use Hire Right to run the background investigations and they may need additional information as they run a thorough background check. I hold a long term security clearance for the federal government and I still had to give additional information. The recruiter was extremely helpful and understanding of how nerve jostling this experience can be and she answered all of my many questions and kept me informed throughout the entire process. I called the recruiter to ask for an update on the final decision and was then offered the position and the top of the salary range. She even celebrated briefly over the phone with me. I cannot wait to start my career with Progressive!!!

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Progressive Insurance (Iselin, NJ) in May 2016

      Interview

Applied online early May, online assessment the next day, phone interview the following week, in-person interview a week after that. The application and interview process is quite lengthy and involved for the level of the position. As others have pointed out, the interviews are almost entirely conducted in the STAR format. I was told it would be a one on one interview with the hiring manager but another supervisor sat in and they took turns asking questions. Make sure to prepare several specific examples of how you organize yourself, communicate with others, work with others, etc. Also make sure to study the company culture and values. The STAR format is definitely helpful and I understand why they use it, but the interviews feel really impersonal and almost robotic. The questions are obviously read off of a script during the phone interview with not much response or conversation about your answers, and during the in-person interview your interviewers spend the whole time jotting down notes and nodding while you talk instead of connecting and going off-script for a more honest conversation. I think it's a little limiting overall to truly represent yourself and it is hard to get a feel for whether or not you would get along with the managers and supervisors. Additionally, some of the questions are a little odd and can catch you off-guard if you haven't prepared for them.
