      Director Digital Interview

      11 July 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at RBC (Toronto, ON)

      Interview

I had a horrific experience interviewing for a Director role in the Digital team at RBC. It started off with recruiter taking 10+ days to confirm date for the on-site interview with a certain Vice President of Digital Development (supposedly a 15+ year RBC veteran) - early ominous signs. Then on the date of on-site interview that Vice President asked for interview to be rescheduled to another day - the ominous signs continue and clear indication of lack of respect for candidate's time. Finally on the rescheduled date of on-site interview, I arrive a few minutes early very excited for the interview only for that Vice President to show up 20 minutes late thereby exterminating my enthusiasm for the role - another ominous sign and very clear lack of respect for candidate's time. After introducing himself, this Vice President starts off by asking his first leading question i.e. he was interrogating about a project with RBC on my Resume that was completed more than 10+ years ago and what's interesting here is that particular project was irrelevant to the role for which I was interviewed - a for sure ominous sign. The Vice President's leading questions irrelevant to the role continued (not sure what he was trying to uncover!) and after 15 minutes of demonstrating his ineptness to conduct an interview he wraps up by saying that the role does not report to him so he wouldn't be the right team member to assess my candidacy but when I had requested feedback he mentioned to me that he couldn't determine whether I was truly passionate about the technology required for the role and wondered if I just wanted to get in so I can work for RBC - sir not a great way to wrap up an interview with any candidate and you need to realize a couple of things here: first, a candidate wouldn't have applied for a role if there was a lack of passion or recognized expertise for the required technology; and second, you also need to realize that a candidate may have other options and you actually need to be welcoming if a candidate really wants to work for your company. Nonetheless, I closed the interview by sending this Vice President a thank you note immediately afterwards (no surprise that he did not respond to it) and after 7+ days finally got feedback from the recruiter that I wasn't selected for the next round of interview - the feedback was fuzzy at best but I must commend the recruiter for doing a terrific job as he was the sole source of positivity from RBC throughout the interview process. My experience here is likely to be dismissed by RBC as one coming from a sour grape but I still would like to thank them for the experience, and I am just sharing my experience as a visible minority candidate to help others since it might be best for them to not consider RBC as a place they would love to work because one could only wonder how the ongoing talent management process can be at this iconic Canadian company given how inconsistent, subjective and archaic is their interview process.

      Question 1

Horrific interview experience as the questions from interviewer were leading ones irrelevant to the role.
