I applied online for mid-career Engineering position at Rakuten. They contacted me via email after a month of application submission, then an online coding test, a week after went for the interview: asking about my past experiences, then gave me a problem scenario on-the-spot and write a script on the whiteboard to solve it.
Rakuten is definitely not a global company as they claimed, it is just another traditional large, bloated and outdated Japanese company. During the interview, they admitted to me that they have huge issue of using different type of conflicting systems, it is a total mess now and they have no idea how to streamline it. Worst, they are very resistance to change, fear of implementing automation and not listening to new suggestion on modern approach, a typical Japanese bureaucratic way of doing things.
