      Senior Product Manager Interview

      30 July 2019
      Anonymous employee
      San Mateo, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Roblox (San Mateo, CA) in July 2019

      Interview

My interview experience with Roblox was superb. The team handled things very professionally from start to finish, paying attention to every detail and always getting back to me at the time they quoted. I did not even think to apply to Roblox until one of their recruiters contacted me via Vettery. And once they reached out, I knew this would be my top choice. I believe there was strong mutual interest from the get-go because I bypassed the initial recruiter phone screen and immediately jumped on the phone with the Hiring Manager who runs Roblox's Growth Team. We had an amazing conversation about my story as a founder. Specifically of interest were my challenges and failures running my company, which made me realize it's important to demonstrate humility and acknowledge that you don't know the answer to everything. If you can turn a hurdle you faced into a learning lesson or a success story, you're in a good place. And overall, they definitely have a soft spot for entrepreneurs and self-starters at this company, seeing how their culture emphasizes self-organization and personal ownership over projects rather than being a small cog in a big machine. After the hiring manager phone screen came the presentation assignment. I was asked to prepare a 30 minute presentation that captures the story of a product-related problem I faced in the past and the approach I took to solve it. They were specifically evaluating my presentation skills and ability to test assumptions, prioritize roadmaps, and interface with different teams to make decisions. They also want to see that you are data-informed, so you have to demonstrate your ability to make KPI-driven hypotheses and draw accurate conclusions from them. Then came onsite day. To kick things off, I made my presentation to a panel of 7 people, all of whom were VP's and Directors of different BU's across the company. After 30 minutes of presenting, 15 minutes of in-depth Q&A followed. And after that, they privately delegated amongst themselves evaluating my performance. From there, members of the panel took turns meeting with me privately for about 45 minutes each. Some presented test cases to evaluate my ideation and product discovery process, while others posed some brain-teaser analytics questions to test my critical thinking skills. And last but not least came the executive onsite. Less than 24 hours after my first onsite, I was invited back to speak with the CEO and other key leaders in the company. They emphasized that this stage is not just a formality, but a major behavioral evaluation for culture fit and level of passion. You need to be equipped with a unique story and be prepared for any topic of discussion, no matter how seemingly random it may be. Then, we discussed comp expectations and benefits and I received very positive feedback about my interview so far. They said to expect to hear back in 2-3 days. Finally, after 3 days of anxiety and anticipation, the Hiring Manager gave me a call and offered me the job. However, I only had 48 hours to accept the offer, which may be a tight timeline for some people. On the flip side, they were also very flexible with my start date, accounting for the fact that I had to relocate. Overall I absolutely love everything the company stands for and the way in which my interview was conducted. I'm so excited to be joining the Roblox Family!
