I did not apply to the location that called me for an interview. Apparently, the hiring manager of the one I did apply to referred me to this location that was quite a few miles away. This is why it took 4 weeks. The phone interview with the Safeway I did apply to led to a referral three weeks later.
Showing up early helped, since I was led to the break room, and most employees were taking a break (the manager was handling things at the checkout). I was introduced to almost every one of my potential future co-workers. Only one in particular was worrisome (I found out later that we would have worked together frequently).
When the manager came in, he was fine with my choice of working in the Bakery, until it came to my schedule. Apparently Bakery Clerks mostly work nights? He stated that being a Courtesy Clerk was best for an 8-4 workday. He asked me questions, and seemed to view me as odd, because I didn't prepare for the questions as well as I hoped. I bombed the birthday cake question. On the spot, I said what came to mind, "cookies, ice cream, and a..." He finished my sentence for me practically, "maybe a topping for the ice cream?" "Yeah." I thought for sure I would never get a call back. Apparently no one answered that question better within the next two days, when I got the call that, "we've decided to hire you." His heart didn't seem in it, and I couldn't see myself being happy in an environment that wasn't my niche. I declined. He did ask why, surprisingly. The rest is a blur. I hope the next goes better than the last.
