      Senior Penetration Tester Interview

      11 June 2024
      Anonymous employee
Newmarket, Suffolk, East of England, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Secure Schools (Newmarket, Suffolk, East of England, England) in May 2024

      Interview

The interview process was very relaxed. They had a talent manager who was my main point of contact throughout. She would call me after each stage to check how I was feeling about the role, ask me about any concerns I had about the process or the job, and basically gauge my level of engagement with the role. There were several stages, most of which discussed the role itself and tried to educate me on how the business worked. This was a departure from interviews for other penetration testing roles I'd previously experienced, which had been much more strongly focused on technical ability. Still, it made sense once I understood that their business and offering differed considerably from a traditional penetration testing house serving the private sector. There was a small technical writing task for the final interview. I was a little taken aback by it as I wasn't aware there would be a technical component until I arrived at the interview. It could have been better explained so I had time to prepare myself for that. I was asked to write an executive summary based on some vulnerability scan results and to give an explainer of an android testing methodology. I was given just 20 minutes for this task, so I was rushed. I've seen another review that states they were looking for free consultancy work with this request; I disagree with that sentiment as I don't think anything customer-facing can be put together in 20 minutes. I thought it was intended to see whether I'd been listening in the interview process and could adopt my style and considerations specifically to the education sector. After that technical writing task, I was given several interviews back-to-back over a couple of hours. I found this a bit exhausting and a bit of a gauntlet, and I would suggest that this be broken up a little more, as each person I spoke to was fresh to the call. By the end, I was a little strung out. I was also shown their SaaS platform for their core services. Part of the job duties was to help productise their Offsec service line and look for opportunities to integrate it with their existing SaaS offerings; this made sense to me. The interview process was quite involved overall, but I reasoned fairly, given that they were hiring for a senior position.
