      Product Manager Interview

      28 Feb 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Edinburgh, Scotland
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Skyscanner (Edinburgh, Scotland)

      Interview

Had issues submitting my CV initially on their site, but then used an internal referral to nudge the recruiter. Had an interview with a recruiter who was exceptionally considerate. Then got a homework assignment that I spent a lot of time on. Got a good impression from the next Skype interview with a peer. Then moved onto a hiring manager interview. Then finally was flown to HQ in Edinburgh where things got disorganized. They changed the interview schedule at the last minute because someone was out of the office, so the first person I interviewed with seemed to have no knowledge of my resume and had not seen my homework assignment. Even worse, someone was supposed to have told me to do a presentation beforehand, which presumably I would have discussed with the first interviewer. He stumbled through my resume with fairly easy questions. But I never heard about any chance to do a presentation. I got the impression that no one I interviewed with that day (out of 6 people; 1 took me to lunch) had even seen my homework assignment, which put me at a distinct disadvantage from all other candidates who possibly were being judged with that and a presentation to boot. Most--not all--were warm and friendly people, giving me standard questions about my experience and problem solving questions. My biggest complaint when I didn't get an offer was that I had asked SEVERAL times throughout the process, "What role am I applying for?" since it was a vague job listing. I was told *repeatedly*: "We don't hire for specific roles, we just hire good people." That's all well and good if that's true, but ultimately I was told that the reason I didn't get an offer was "You didn't have enough experience for the roles that we were considering you for." The people who objected to me being hired were almost all people who had founded their own companies and Skyscanner had acquired them. Meaning, most of them had no experience working in non-startup tech companies and were CEOs of their own small startups. I felt like they were judging me through that lens, not having had that a startup founder's background--but having a lot of large and small tech company experience instead. I realized how inexperienced some of them were when one interviewer's response to my question about his biggest challenge was about figuring out how to evangelize his ideas throughout the company--which is a pretty standard exercise for anyone in a product manager role who's worked in a large company before. Probably doesn't need to be said, knowing that tech is not known for its diversity, but of the 7 people I interviewed with that day, all of them were white men.

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to reflect and provide feedback on your interview process with Skyscanner. We appreciate the time you spent on your homework exercise and would like to reassure you that this valuable step at the start of the process help’s us understand your experience more in-depth. It’s not used as part of any face to face interview. In terms of vagueness as to role description, as a fast-based business that is constantly changing, we advertise a core part of current roles and do also consider building roles for the right skill-set and experience. Which is why our recruitment process is more flexible and can cover a number of currently advertised or new roles. We have experienced interviewers from a range of background from engineering and product and will assess fairly against our core competencies. Many thanks once again for your review, all of which we’ve taken on board and fed back. Wishing you all the best on your job search. Kind regards Liza, Skyscanner

      Interview

Initial screening call with in-house recruiter. Expected general job and company suitability questions, but was also asked in-depth questions about my technical skills. Didn’t feel like this was fair as the recruiter did not work in Product.

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your recent interview experience with Skyscanner. We appreciate your honesty and regret any frustration you felt during the screening call. We understand that being asked in-depth technical questions by someone not directly involved in Product may have been unexpected and uncomfortable. Your insights are valuable, and we'll use them to improve our interview process, ensuring it is fair and relevant to all candidates. We wish you the best and thank you for considering a role with us. -Katie Bulloch, Senior Talent Acquisition Manager

      Interview

Took over a month from application to them contacting me. Began interview process with HR interview which seemed more of a formality. She explained the different multiple stages of future interviews which seemed rather prolonged and asked me to send her my availability for the second interview which, as I had already received another job offer I was happy with, I did not do given the commitment they were asking for in terms of stages. Had the process started earlier, I may have been more willing to take part.
