      Customer Service Interview

      17 Sept 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Start360 Group

      Interview

Red Flags, Warning Bells. Declined. Some important facts I found out during the interview: - You will not be an employee of Start360, but self-employed on their behalf. - You're expected to work 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday. - You're not paid hourly, or have a base salary. You are paid only if you secure a new customer. - Start360 will not cover your travel expenses. - Your job is to sell Shell energy contracts and similar to customers directly [face-to-face] at 'events’. - Events are the stands you see in supermarkets and shopping centre corridors etc. I was first contacted via indeed for the customer service role, I did not apply for this role directly. The interview consisted of 2 stages. The first stage was a one-way video interview in which I recorded myself answering 4 generic interview questions, each with a 2 minute time cap. Almost instantly after submitting the video I received a glowing email saying my personality was great on top of a fantastic CV, and that they would like to have a second email via Zoom the following day, approx 60-90minutes long. The second interview. The gentleman interviewing us [there was two of us being interviewed at the same time, odd] was sat in his car. Instantly that made things seems slightly off. The interviewer introduced himself quickly as a Junior Executive Manager. He went on to give a solid 40 minute presentation which seemed more of a beginners guide to marketing that any specifics about Start360. The power point presentation was noticeably poorly put together; dated, bright pink with old clip-art illustrations and stock images. This presentation was a stark and unflattering contrast to Start360’s relatively smart white and red website. Consistently, 'fast progression', 'motivation', 'breaking records', 'hitting targets' were mentioned. The interviewer stated a girl who had only been with the company 3 weeks had advanced to a role where she now educating the newest recruits & was now in a leadership and management position - bizarrely fast progression it seems. In terms of earnings, he said that we would earn £50 per customer, & would expect to secure 3 customers per day, averaging £300-400 per week. Hours would be 8am-6pm. However, it is worth noting that this important information was mentioned extremely quickly & briefly. The 'interview' felt more like a sales pitch than an interview. Myself & the other interviewee were barely given a chance to get a word in other than nod. We were not given time to ask questions, but rather he added us back to the 'waiting room'. He then brought me back in alone to asked if I "could not be taught and succeed at this role?" This appeared to be a loaded question. 1 hour later I received a follow-up call for me to ask questions: Almost instantly when I asked these questions, his tone changed to become a lot more defensive & frustrated compared to his more chummy, laddish tone previously. My questions were as follows: Q. If for any reason foot-fall was low at one of the events, or for any reason I made no successful sales one day, would my time or transport be paid for? A. "In my entire time working here I have never had a member of my team secure less than 3 customers a day, so that has never been problem, so we don’t have a strategy for that. Nobody struggles." [So that is a no]. Q. Are transport or petrol costs to and from events covered by the company? A. "I have always driven, so I would just ask my team to chip in for petrol money. You can claim mileage back." Q. My response to this: Claiming mileage back alarmed me. So I asked if I would be an employee to Start360 or self-employed. A. "You would be self employed. If you were an employee that would mean you would be paid hourly or on a salary. Whereas when your self-employed you can be paid on your performance. This means you will pay less tax, less national insurance and stuff. It is just a much better way of working." [As a self employed person you do not any of the insurance of if were actually an employee. For example; sick pay, if you are assaulted on job, if you are injured on job, employee rights]. After these questions, the interviewer said that all the other applicants had been asking about progression, whereas I had been asking about making no sales and how I would earn money. This, to him this reflected I had no confidence in myself or think I would be ineffective at this job. I would have thought anyone person with a brain would ask their potential employer how they get paid, what they get paid, and what hours they are expected to work? There was a whole host of red flags during this interview. The interviewer made Start360 seem slimy and untrustworthy. The fact you are not actually employed but self-employed with no base pay or salary screams of all the controversy Uber has had in the UK. I declined this job. It seemed to me like you’ll end up selling your soul as well as a few Shell contracts.

      Interview

I was emailed from indeed followed by a 2 step interview. The first being recording video or yourself answering 4/5 questions about what you want in a job and how you would succeed at it. The second being a 60/90 minute zoom call. My interviewer didn't turn up to the zoom call and after waiting 30 minutes I emailed to remind them and possibly reschedule. The email I got in response was short a d simply stated they just got back from the field and that's why they were late. I decided not to reschedule as the whole process and a couple of reviews sent a couple of alarm bells ringing.

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Start360 Group in July 2020

      Interview

I was approached via Indeed regarding the role, agreed to take part in a one way video interview. Link is provided and 4 questions are asked to which you do a recording of yourself for up to 2 mins per question. This then gets sent in. After this I was approached for a two way interview via Zoom call. The interview started off fairly normal with introductions, the interviewer then proceeded to advise me that somehow my video interview was deleted somehow, therefore he has not seen it but the recruiter did and they said it was good. He then explained how he is going to show me some information about the company's ways of working and the basics of marketing. This became a 30/40 min one way presentation telling me all about how marketing works; how they do it within their company and the clients they work with. I found this quite strange as usually expect that type of information to be divulged after being hired. Prior to the interview I did some research and looked through all pages on their website, this was to help me get a better understanding on their ways. I was impressed with the care and values they held so dearly in their way of work and felt it would be somewhere enjoyable to work. To my surprise absolutely nothing on their website was mentioned during the PowerPoint; nothing regarding their values and why they stand out etc. It was purely figures on how they make money for clients and themselves and the career ladder. It felt like a beginners class on marketing. To add to this, the presentation was very poor quality and also didn't contain any corporate colours or company branding so it felt it could have been a presentation to represent anyone. This was very worrying coming from a marketing company! The interviewer used one of his recent hires as an example for the career ladder, stating she has only been with the company 6 weeks with the same role as me and is already travelling the country and training new staff. I personally would prefer someone who has been there a bit longer to train me, however if anyone interested wants a quick jump in the career ladder then they seem to have this in place. The job did not advertise a salary/hourly rate or specify hours to be worked, therefore I thought it would be a very reasonable question to ask about this. The interviewer became very confused, and partially agitated when I asked and didn't understand what I meant by this. It took about 3 attempts with me wording it differently for him to finally give me an answer about wages, the way to see it is that you are self-employed in a way, therefore if you do not make a sale, you do not get paid. To add to this, he added the comment that "we don't believe in salaries as it encourages laziness within people and stops them from working hard". As for the hours, I still did not get an answer, however he did state that "you get out what you put in", so for anyone reading you may interpret this however you like. Around 4 times he asked me during the interview if there was anything I felt I was not capable of doing in this role, although I gave him no grounds to doubt me. It was difficult getting a word in at all during the presentation. I did inform him at the start of the interview that I had never had a role within Marketing before therefore this is very new to me. I then advised him that I am a quick learner therefore I am sure to pick it up. It felt like a pointless and weak question to ask someone who has yet to understand marketing thoroughly. Finally I was told I would receive a call in an hour after he finished his other interviews (unsure why) and that I would get a call with the CEO the following day. It turns out that the hour is to give me "plenty" of time to have a think and I was then invited to have the call with the CEO the next day. I chose to turn this down, the whole experience put me completely off working for this company. This call ended with a lovely statement from the interviewer "oh you had me fooled, I am glad you told me before the call tomorrow as it would have looked really bad on me". In future I advise this company to choose carefully on their interviewer as I don't need to be spoken to as if I am simple when I just want to know the basic information any employer should divulge prior to hiring. To add to this, chewing gum during an interview is not professional as well as making the statement "changing jobs is like moving on from a relationship, you do it because you are bored". This is not going to help encourage new staff to join you.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

No "interview" type questions were asked during two way video interview. Unfortunately I did not note all questions during one way video process however first one was just an introduction to you. The questions had more aim towards personality than skills.
