I interviewed at The Kent Autistic Trust (Chatham, England) in Feb 2023
Interview
As someone who has been interviewed by the Kent Autistic Trust, the process can feel structured yet welcoming. Here’s a general outline based on a typical interview experience:
Application Review & Initial Contact: After submitting your application, if shortlisted, you’re contacted by the HR team for an initial screening call. This call usually confirms your availability for an interview, goes over your application, and may include a brief discussion of your experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum.
Interview Format: The interview is often held in person at one of their facilities, although virtual interviews might also be possible. It's typically conducted by a panel, which can include senior staff, team leaders, and sometimes individuals who directly work with service users. The panel creates a formal yet supportive environment.
Question Focus: Questions focus on your experience working with people with autism or in care roles. You might be asked situational questions to assess how you would handle challenging behaviors or support individuals with diverse needs. They may also explore your knowledge of autism, communication strategies, safeguarding, and person-centered care.

Question 1
Can you give an example of how you would support an individual with autism who is experiencing sensory overload?
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at The Kent Autistic Trust (Brompton, South East England, England) in Apr 2022
Interview
Easy process clearly outlined. Remote interviews at the time of my posting. Process was explained in detail, and I was provided with relevant help and advice. Support from the HR team was great. And I know what was expected of me and what the next step was at all times.

We generally recruit direct rather than through agencies. As a not for profit we prefer to invest in pay and benefits rather than recruitment fees.
We also pay staff for referrals - to make the process easy we use the Care Friends recruitment app.
I applied in-person. I interviewed at The Kent Autistic Trust (Chatham, England) in Nov 2017
Interview
I answered set questions off a sheet , no offer of looking around, or even to ask any questions, very quick interview , I was surprised as thought they would be more thorough as we would be supporting vulnerable adults
Our approach is thorough, we previously asked all candidates set filter questions when applying, but now our policy is to phone each applicant and carry out a screening interview using our scorecard. W pose questions and scenarios designed to ensure we assess the values and integrity of those we are interviewing but it shouldn't feel like a candidate is being interograted, indeed it is designated a friendly two way communication exchange to ensure that we both compatible.
