I applied through university. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy (Washington, DC) in Sept 2016
Interview
First there is a phone interview followed by an in person interview with the intern coordinator and then the fellow you may be working with. The questions tend to build on each other, so you are asked what you believe the biggest threat to the US is, then based on that answer they ask you for policies to address the issue you selected. Make sure you know the nuts and bolts of the issues you are talking about, they don't tolerate glossing over issues you don't know with non-answers that sound good. If you being up a topic, it better be one you know well enough to argue, because they will push back against whatever policy position you take, and you need to be able to defend it.
