      Software Engineer Interview

      23 Aug 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Thumbtack

      Interview

Technical phone screen followed by onsite interview. I had a pretty terrible experience here. My onsite was with 4 technical team members. One manager and three engineers in total. Thumbtack really needs to screen their interviewers. I've been in the industry for about 8 years and it's really something else. I answered one fully correct, one fully correct with some Googling because I couldn't remember some API method names, did the system design without too much whiteboarding, and one last algorithm question that wasn't optimal. One of the interviewers did not know the answer to the question that he himself asked me. I answered it completely only to hear that he gave me negative feedback because I didn't know the names of a method. The funny thing is, he didn't know all 4 of the methods I was describing. Nor he did know how to implement the question he was asking... It was apparent when I showed him my implementation and he went, "Ah! that's how you do it!" My last interviewer spoke in mumbles and barely spoke at all during the interview. When I asked clarifying questions, he'd look up from his laptop bewildered. He gave no feedback as I was talking through approaches. Ultimately, he said to implement one of the ideas that I mentioned. Afterwards, his feedback was that I didn't use the optimal data structure. But I haven't gotten to the worst part. In the beginning of one of the interviews, my interviewer said something along the lines of, "Thumbtack is trying to hire for more diversity. Too bad for us, huh?" followed by a smile and a wink. Needless to say, I was absolutely appalled. Having another person to mediate the interview would be my best suggestion for Thumbtack. How are you so sure that your employees have the same goal as the company to hire the best if their preconceived notions get in the way?

Thank you for sharing the details of your interview experience. We’re sorry your time with us was not positive. We strive for a strong candidate experience where each person feels engaged, respected and well informed — and we fell short this time. As a company, we constantly look for ways to improve our process and feedback such as this, while hard to hear, is invaluable. We are taking it very seriously and have already shared with our V.P. of People and V.P. of Engineering, among others, for visibility and immediate action. As you feel comfortable, please reach out to your recruiter so we can start a dialogue and address this matter with you personally and directly.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack in June 2024

      Interview

One round of recruiter call, the recruiter rescheduled the call 5 times (not exaggerating). when we finally got on the call he sounded unenthusiastic about the company, lots of sighs, even said that he's already in a friday mood (it was a wednesday). Asked me about what I knew about the company, I gave him a high level description, he made fun of me for not giving detailed enough info and not doing my research before the interview.. overall he came of as rude. will not be moving forward with them. He also seemed very stuck on the leveling of the position, this could be a good thing but I've never had a recruiter needing me to have the exact title from my last company, as far as I know, these titles mean different things at different companies.

      Software Engineer Interview

      29 Aug 2023

      Positive experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack in July 2023

      Interview

The entire interview process was straightforward and efficient. The recruiter was thorough in explaining the nuances of the role and steps of the interview process during our initial call. After the technical interview (online challenge via Hackerrank), he prepped me for the virtual onsite and made sure I felt confident and prepared. (I'm interviewing at several different companies and many of them don't even offer a prep call or guidance along the way.) This left me with a really positive impression about Thumbtack overall. I didn't receive an offer, but my experience throughout the process was positive and the recruiter said he would let me know if they other roles open where I might be a better fit, which I appreciated. Keeping my fingers crossed to hear from them in the future.

      Interview

Not great. Would not recommend applying to this company but do so at your own risk. Person interviewing me seemed nice though. They did not seem to know what they wanted from me as an engineer.
