I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack in Oct 2017
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter a year prior to interviewing but I had already accepted an internship at the time. I reached out to that same recruiter this round and was given a coding challenge. The coding challenge was a hacker rank that you had a week to complete. The problem was interesting and pretty fun to work on. The lack of time pressure allowed me to do it leisurely and use best practices without a huge time pressure.
After submitting, I was quickly brought onsite and went through 4 1:1 screens. These screens are different than other experiences Ive had because rather than whiteboarding, you work through a problem and then are expected to implement and RUN it in a coderpad-like environment. This was a bit stressful but overall, I thought it was a fun experience with interesting, relevant problems.
The employees were passionate and bright. Everyone I spoke to was friendly and I generally enjoyable day. The company seemed to be growing fast with ambitious goals.
I decided to accept the offer based professional growth opportunity, mentorship and senior engineers and culture
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack in June 2024
Interview
One round of recruiter call, the recruiter rescheduled the call 5 times (not exaggerating). when we finally got on the call he sounded unenthusiastic about the company, lots of sighs, even said that he's already in a friday mood (it was a wednesday). Asked me about what I knew about the company, I gave him a high level description, he made fun of me for not giving detailed enough info and not doing my research before the interview.. overall he came of as rude. will not be moving forward with them. He also seemed very stuck on the leveling of the position, this could be a good thing but I've never had a recruiter needing me to have the exact title from my last company, as far as I know, these titles mean different things at different companies.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
What did you know about the company, describe what has been `keeping you busy`
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack in July 2023
Interview
The entire interview process was straightforward and efficient. The recruiter was thorough in explaining the nuances of the role and steps of the interview process during our initial call. After the technical interview (online challenge via Hackerrank), he prepped me for the virtual onsite and made sure I felt confident and prepared. (I'm interviewing at several different companies and many of them don't even offer a prep call or guidance along the way.) This left me with a really positive impression about Thumbtack overall. I didn't receive an offer, but my experience throughout the process was positive and the recruiter said he would let me know if they other roles open where I might be a better fit, which I appreciated. Keeping my fingers crossed to hear from them in the future.

Interview
Not great. Would not recommend applying to this company but do so at your own risk. Person interviewing me seemed nice though. They did not seem to know what they wanted from me as an engineer.
