I applied online and received a phone call about a week later. I had a very pleasant phone screening where I was asked about my background and qualifications for the job, more technical details than interview questions. I was also told a little bit about pay range and benefits at this time.
I was emailed an invitation for an in-person interview and told to prepare a 10-15 minute presentation on the topic of your choice (they time your presentation; don't go over like I did).
They interviewed 4 finalists that day and the interview started with my presentation (to 5 members of the store team and a regional trainer) and was followed by the usual questions. "Why do you want to work here?" "How do you stay organized?" "Why do you want to leave where you are now?" Knowing a lot about their corporate culture seemed to impress them. It was a usual panel -- someone were very engaged, others were very quiet, and you could tell kind of wondered why they were there. Each person had one question.
Then there was a series of writing exercises that they give you 15-20 minutes to do on a computer in another room (you're supervised and timed) -- had to develop a flyer for a store meeting, and a spreadsheet showing who had taken classes. There isn't enough time to finish all the exercises and I was told "no one ever finishes them."
Everyone was very pleasant though the store managers I have met seem very, very "hyper." They make decisions the same day and called me to say they had gone with an in-house candidate (which happens most of the time, apparently), but we had a very nice conversation and they encouraged me to apply to other positions.
They did not do a background check or check references, or even ask for any references.
